The Pioneer of
Fibre Optic Sensing (FOS) as a technology has come a long
way since its inception. Originally employed in the oil and gas
industry, the technology has been widely received as an

innovative potential of FOS in the railway sector. As a spin-off
from Frauscher Sensor Technology, the company is a pioneer,
offering a railway specific FOS solution based on Distributed
Acoustic Sensing (DAS). The first quantitative FOS system of
the industry resulted from this fruitful combination – and it is
going to revolutionise railway operations.
It generates valuable real-time information on train journeys,
asset conditions and data from monitoring the infrastructure
– all based on a single solution and without the need for
additional on-board or trackside components. The thus
generated data allows railway operators and contractual
partners to make use of the information derived from this data
via an open interface platform. This allows Frauscher Sensonic
addresses the railway industry’s present and future challenges
– and paves the way to redesign traffic management enabling
higher efficiency of operational networks.

Track more Our Mission
with less In an increasingly complex world, we make it
easier for our customers to obtain the information
they need.
Our Vision
We enable the revolution of railway operation – by
turning existing communication infrastructure into
sensitive distributed sensors. Real-time information
about train journeys, asset conditions or simply, data
from monitoring the infrastructure can be accessed
via an open interface platform. Our innovative
approach to providing the solution holistically offers
immense flexibility and multiple advantages for the
entire railway industry.
03 Frauscher Sensonic 2020-01COMPANY TECHNOLOGY SOLUTION BENEFITS Sensonic offers the first quantitative FOS solution specifically developed for the railway market. The use of the latest generation of DAS systems marks a quantum leap in this area – which we actively and collaboratively shape for and with the industry by making our technology available to operators and system integrators. A new way of tracking: In simple terms, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS)
Fibre Optic Sensing turns fibre optic cables into virtual microphones.
This results in an astounding potential regarding
monitoring of railway operations and the railway
Solutions based on fibre optic sensing (FOS) are increasingly
gaining traction in this field of tension. At Frauscher Sensonic,
we’ve been focusing on distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) as part
of a FOS-based approach for several years already. Tests and
comparative studies have shown that this technology offers an The DAS Principle
immense potential for the implementation of railway applications.
In order to function, DAS-based solutions – and thus our
system – require only a single-mode optical fibre. The
connected Sensonic unit launches 2,000 laser impulses
per second into it. Acoustic sound waves radiating against
the cable create minimal structure-borne deviations. This
alters the backscatter of the laser pulses that are reflected
back towards the source.
The change is measured as a function of the time that has
elapsed since the emission of the laser pulse. That’s how
the cable becomes a sensor that can monitor up to 100
kilometres of track.
