FEAST OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD – Today we celebrate this beautiful feast reminding us of the beginning of our Lord’s ministry as He went forth to proclaim the Good News. With this feast we complete the Christmas season so the beautiful Christmas decorations will come down tomorrow as we begin Ordinary Time once again. The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord is also a time for each of us to remind ourselves of the dignity we have as children of God by virtue of our own Baptism. In addition, we also renew our commitment to follow our baptismal call to love God above all things and our neighbor as ourselves. As we bless ourselves with holy water at the beginning of Mass (in normal times) let it serve as a reminder of our own call to service in the Church. RESTART OF IN-PERSON LEARNING AT OUR SCHOOL – This past week we had been scheduled to return to in-person instruction at St. Andrew School. Unfortunately, due to the rising number of Covid cases in Los Angeles County, we received word last weekend that this is being postponed. Here is the message we received from the Superintendent of Schools: "Prudence dictates that caution be exercised at this time to ensure safe operations can be maintained upon a return to campus. Therefore, we are recommending to schools who have been providing in-person instruction for TK-12 students (i.e. waivers, K-12 reopening, high-need student cohorts, day camps) to resume in-person instruction and/or on-campus distance learning on Tuesday, January 19, 2021, returning to instruction via off-campus distance learning next week. This two-week in-person “pause” will create a safe distance between the break and a return to in-person instruction. This action will not jeopardize a school’s previously approved waiver or reopening status with public health." As a result of this we have to continue with remote instruction. Our goal is to return to campus for in- person instruction on Wednesday, January 20th. Thankfully, this does not affect our Pre-Kindergarten children who are still allowed in-person instruction on campus. This is very disappointing but it is a step taken with a superabundance of caution. ALTAR SERVER TRAINING – If you have a son who is interested in being an Altar Boy you are invited to our next Server training class which will take place on Sunday, January 17th at 3:30 p.m. Altar boys must have already received their First Holy Communion and be at least in the 3rd grade. This class will also be a good review for our current Altar Servers as well. WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS! – As we begin this new year I also want to take the opportunity to welcome all of our new families to St. Andrew's. Surprisingly, in the midst of the pandemic, we have had a very large number of new families registering in the parish. I have been regularly meeting them and am delighted that they are with us. Welcome to the St. Andrew family! SACRIFICIAL GIVING – As we begin this new year, I also want to express my sincere gratitude to all our parishioners who have made a commitment to increase their weekly offertory donation to our parish. It is only through your generosity that we are able to maintain our beautiful church and parish plant and all the various ministries to our people. May God reward you!
SOME REMINDERS ABOUT THE SACRED LITURGY – As we begin this New Year and close out the Christmas season, it would be worthwhile to remember a few common sense items regarding our liturgical celebrations: - Come on time! – It is amazing how many people consistently come late to Mass. This is truly sad because those persons miss out on the very important Introductory Rites and the Liturgy of the Word. If they come late enough, they don’t even fulfill their Sunday Mass obligation! Barring unforeseen emergencies, coming to Mass late on a regular basis is simply an indication of poor planning. Make it a goal to come early and prayerfully prepare for the beginning of the Mass. Needless to say, we ought never leave Mass until after the last blessing and closing hymn. Remember who was the first person to leave Mass early (at the Last Supper!) - Proper attire – Worshiping God in church is not like going to a baseball game or to the park or gymnasium. Sadly, some people don’t realize this and rather than putting on their “Sunday best” for Mass they come dressed quite informally sometimes even wearing clothing more appropriate for exercise than for worship of God. We ought to dress appropriately for Mass giving God the respect He deserves. It doesn’t mean having to wear expensive or fancy clothes. It simply means wearing our “Sunday best” whatever that may be for each person. And, of course, always with modest attire. Men do not wear hats in church. - Electronics – In our modern age, electronic mobile devices of all kinds are simply a fact of life for the majority of us. Nevertheless, we should remember to turn these devices off (or at least in "silent mode") as we enter church so as not to disturb the prayer of others or our public worship. - Eating and drinking – The only eating and drinking that should take place in church is that of the reception of Holy Communion. Other than that, it simply is not a place to eat and drink. This is also true for children (other than infants who are still nursing). The chewing of gum, of course, is always inappropriate in church. - Silence – Since the church is a place of prayer, silence should always be observed. The greeting of our friends and neighbors is appropriate for after Mass outside of the church so as not to disturb the prayer of others. - Applause – Applause at the end of Mass is not appropriate. Our musicians are there to sustain the singing of the congregation not to perform. Here's what the Popes have said about this: Pope Saint Pius X said, “It is not fitting that the servant should be applauded in his Master’s house.” Pope Saint John XXIII said as people waited for him to arrive to a church outside of Rome, “I am very glad to have come here. But if I must express a wish, it is that in church you not shout out, that you not clap your hands, and that you not greet even the Pope, because ‘templum Dei, templum Dei.’ (‘The temple of God is the temple of God.’) Pope Benedict XVI: “Wherever applause breaks out in the liturgy because of some human achievement, it is a sure sign that the essence of liturgy has totally disappeared and been replaced by a kind of religious entertainment. Such attraction fades quickly – it cannot compete in the market of leisure pursuits, incorporating as it increasingly does various forms of religious titillation." - Reverence – We must always remember that the church is the House of God. As such we must always maintain a spirit of reverence and respect. As we enter the vestibule, we should bless ourselves with holy water (once it returns after the pandemic). Then as we enter the church, we should make a genuflection toward Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle (in our church it is currently located on the north side of the altar - right side) prior to entering our pew. FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR: The Baptism of the Lord January 10, 2021 Dilexisti justitiam, et odisti iniquitatem: propterea unxit te Deus, Deus tuus, oleo lætitiæ præ consortibus tuis. You have loved justice and hated iniquity; therefore, God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your companions. The introit for today, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, is taken from Psalm 44 and speaks of the Messiah, a term which means “Anointed One,” who is prefigured by David in so many ways—not the least by the anointing of David, after which “the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him” (I Samuel 16:13). In today’s feast, we reach the culmination of the Christmas season in the calendar of the Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite (sometimes called the Novus ordo Mass) with the figure of John the Baptist’s prophecy of the coming of One mightier than him, who will baptize with the Holy Spirit. Immediately after this, we witness the amazing and even scandalous scene of Jesus being baptized by John. Of course, John’s baptism of repentance was not the same as Christian Baptism; nor was the Lord in need of the remission of sin; but rather Jesus submitted to baptism by John so that the will of the Father would be fulfilled: and at this baptism, we see a manifestation of all three persons of the Holy Trinity: “on coming up out of the water, [Jesus] saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, ‘You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” This fulfills the prophecy of the psalm in the Introit for Christmas Midnight Mass: Dóminus dixit ad me: Filius meus es tu. Ego hodie genui te, “the Lord said to me: you are my Son. Today I have begotten you.” The Solemnity of Christmas saw the manifestation of the Messiah and Redeemer to the people of Israel in the persons of the shepherds who witnessed the angels’ song; last week’s feast, the Solemnity of the Epiphany, saw the manifestation (ἐπιφάνεια, epipháneia, “manifestation” of the Redeemer to the Gentiles in the persons of the three Magi; and today, that manifestation is made complete in the three persons of the Holy Trinity at the Baptism of the Lord. In older times, these manifestations were celebrated in one single feast, along with, interestingly enough, the episode of the Wedding at Cana, where Jesus—at Mary’s apparent urging—turned water into wine and there began his public ministry. It is for this reason that the entrance hymn I sing this week (unfortunately, we still don’t have permission for congregational singing due to the pandemic), Christopher Wadsworth’s Songs of Thankfulness and Praise, in the verse that starts off with the Baptism of the Lord (verse two), concludes that verse with a reference to the Wedding at Cana. The repeated line at the end of the hymn sums up a major theme of the Advent-Christmas cycle: Anthems be to thee addressed, God in man made manifest. And the last verse of the hymn sung this week (but not the last verse of the hymn; we will sing other verses next week) is an intercessory and hortatory (exhorting) text. It is an excellent example of doctrinally correct hymnody, and extraordinary in the economy of its words: Grant us grace to see thee, Lord, mirrored in thy holy Word; | may we imitate thee now, and be pure, as pure art thou; | that we like to thee may be at thy great Epiphany; | and may praise thee, ever blest, God in man made manifest. Note that in our salvation, we are both changed by God into his likeness while being given to eternal praise of God: in this, we seek to follow the Lord’s command be holy as the Father is holy (Matthew 5:48). Next week, the second Sunday in Ordinary Time, we will see the beginning of Jesus’s public ministry, and over the next few weeks the calling of the apostles and the establishment of his teaching authority. (It is a great pity that the current lectionary only gives us the reading of the Wedding at Cana only once in the three-year cycle, an event that was historically linked with the Epiphany and the Baptism of the Lord.) It is not until the fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time that we hear of the first healings. Nevertheless, these are also strongly connected to the feast we celebrate today, for today we see the completion of the manifestation of him who came to heal the sick of body and soul. In Advent, we sang the phrase marana tha, an Aramaic word meaning “come, Lord!” If the phrase is divided slightly differently as maran atha, then the meaning is changed; and so, as we started off the Advent-Christmas cycle singing and saying “Marana tha!” “Come, Lord!” we end it by confessing, in faith, “maran atha!” “The Lord has come!”

Con esta fiesta completamos la temporada navideña, por lo que las hermosas decoraciones navideñas se removerán mañana al comenzar el Tiempo Ordinario una vez más. La Fiesta del Bautismo del Señor es también un momento para que cada uno de nosotros recordemos la dignidad que tenemos como hijos de Dios en virtud de nuestro propio Bautismo. Además, también renovamos nuestro compromiso de seguir nuestro llamado bautismal de amar a Dios sobre todas las cosas y al prójimo como a nosotros mismos. ALGUNOS RECORDATORIOS SOBRE LA SAGRADA LITURGIA – Al comenzar este Año Nuevo y cerrar
la temporada navideña, valdría la pena recordar algunos puntos de sentido común sobre nuestras celebraciones
litúrgicas:
- ¡Llege a tiempo! – Es sorprendente la cantidad de personas que llegan tarde constantemente a la Misa.
Es realmente triste porque esas personas se pierden los importantes Ritos Introductorios y la Liturgia de la
Palabra. Si llegan lo suficientemente tarde, ¡ni siquiera cumplen con su obligación de la Misa dominical! Salvo
emergencias imprevistas, llegar tarde a Misa de forma regular es simplemente una indicación de una mala
planificación. Propóngase llegar temprano y prepararse en oración para el comienzo de la Misa. No hace falta
decir que nunca debemos dejar la Misa hasta después de la última bendición y el himno de clausura. Recuerde
quién fue la primera persona en salir temprano de la Misa (¡en la Última Cena!)
- Vestiduro adecuada – Adorar a Dios en la iglesia no es como ir a un juego de béisbol, al parque o al gimnasio.
Lamentablemente, algunas personas no se dan cuenta de esto y en lugar de ponerse sus "mejores galas
dominicales" para la Misa, vienen vestidos de manera bastante informal, a veces incluso con ropa más apropiada
para hacer ejercicio que para adorar a Dios. Debemos vestirnos apropiadamente para la Misa dándole a Dios
el respeto que se merece. No significa tener que usar ropa cara o elegante. Simplemente significa usar nuestro
“mejor traje de domingo”, lo que sea para cada persona. Y, por supuesto, siempre con un ropa modesta. Los
hombres no usan gorras o sombreros dentro la iglesia.
- Electrónica – En nuestra era moderna, los aparatos móviles electrónicos de todo tipo son simplemente una
realidad para la mayoría de nosotros. Sin embargo, debemos recordar apagar estos aparatos (o al menos en
"modo silencioso") al entrar a la iglesia para no perturbar la oración de otros o nuestro culto público.
- Comer y beber – Lo único que debe comer y beber en la iglesia es en la recepción de la Sagrada Comunión.
Aparte de eso, simplemente no es un lugar para comer y beber. Esto también es válido para los niños (excepto los
bebés que todavía están amamantando). Masticar chicle, por supuesto, siempre es inapropiado en la iglesia.
- Silencio – Dado que la iglesia es un lugar de oración, siempre se debe guardar silencio. El saludo de nuestros
amigos y vecinos es apropiado para después de la Misa fuera de la iglesia para no perturbar la oración de los
demás.
- Aplausos – Los aplausos al final de la Misa no son apropiados. Nuestros músicos están ahí para sostener el
canto de la congregación no para entrentamento. Esto es lo que han dicho los Papas sobre esto:
El Papa San Pío X dijo: "No es apropiado que el siervo sea aplaudido en la casa de su Maestro".
El Papa San Juan XXIII dijo mientras la gente esperaba que llegara a una iglesia en las afueras de Roma: “Estoy
muy contento de haber venido aquí. Pero si debo expresar un deseo, es que en la iglesia no griten, que no
aplaudan, y que no saluden ni siquiera al Papa, porque 'templum Dei, templum Dei' ('El templo de Dios es el
templo de Dios. ')
Papa Benedicto XVI: “Dondequiera que estallen aplausos en la liturgia por algún logro humano, es una señal
segura de que la esencia de la liturgia ha desaparecido totalmente y ha sido reemplazada por una especie de
entretenimiento religioso. Tal atracción se desvanece rápidamente no puede competir en el mercado de las
actividades de placer, incorporando cada vez más diversas formas de excitación religiosa ".
- Reverencia – Siempre debemos recordar que la iglesia es la Casa de Dios. Como tal, debemos mantener siempre
un espíritu de reverencia y respeto. Al entrar en el vestíbulo, debemos bendecirnos con agua bendita (una vez
que regrese después de la pandemia). Luego, al entrar a la iglesia, debemos hacer una genuflexión hacia Nuestro
Señor en el Santísimo Sacramento en el tabernáculo (en nuestra iglesia actualmente se encuentra en el lado norte
del altar - lado derecho) antes de entrar a nuestro banco.

Amaste la justicia y aborreciste la iniquidad; por tanto, Dios, tu Dios, te ha ungido con óleo de alegría más que a tus compañeros. El introito de hoy, la Fiesta del Bautismo del Señor, está tomado del Salmo 44 y habla del Mesías, un término que significa "Ungido", que es prefigurado por David de muchas maneras, no menos importante por la unción. de David, después de lo cual “el Espíritu del Señor se precipitó sobre él” (I Samuel 16:13). En la fiesta de hoy, llegamos a la culminación del tiempo navideño en el calendario de la Forma Ordinaria del Rito Romano (a veces llamado Misa del Novus Ordo) con la figura de la profecía de Juan el Bautista de la venida de Uno más poderoso que él, quien bautizar con el Espíritu Santo.
