Page 6 The Senior Bulletin October 1 — 31, 2022 Furry Friend Fraud: Pet Sale Scams on the Rise How to avoid online pet sale scams You can find just about anything online, including your family’s new furry friend. But you can also find scams involving those cute puppy dogs or cuddly kittens. While pet scams aren’t new, they have gained traction in recent years, especially during the first several months of the pandemic. Fraudulent animal sales can take on many forms, but the most common include animals that never material- ize after paying hundreds of dollars or pets with a myriad of health problems. Both types of scams have been reported to the Iowa Attorney General’s office in recent years. Out Hundreds of Dollars In a complaint sent to the AG’s office, Earl Stokley of North Carolina says he purchased a pit bull puppy online through an Iowa man, paying $800 through Zelle. The following day, he says he was contacted and told he needed to pay an additional $1,800 for a special crate to transport the puppy. “We knew it was a scam and asked for a refund,” he said. Today, he has no puppy and remains out the $800. Because he used Zelle for the payment, he hasn’t been able to receive a refund. Sick Animals Even when pet buyers receive the animal, they might not be fortunate. Several Iowans have reported to the AG’s office that the animals they purchased online arrived with serious health problems, requiring expensive medical visits, tests and heartbreakingly, the need to be euthanized. What to Look For If you find yourself searching for a new family pet, make sure you protect yourself. Scammers often take ad- vantage of high emotional situations, and the excitement of adding a new pet to your life is just that. Here are some tips from the Federal Trade Commission to ensure you don’t end up on the wrong side of a pet scam: Work with a reputable animal shelter or rescue organization that is local. Most legitimate shelters and rescue leagues post their adoption fees online and they won’t ask you to pay additional unexpected fees. If you stick with a local organization, you may not have to pay until you pick up your new pet. A quick online search will direct you to local shelters. Do your homework when buying a pet. Research prices for the breed you’re interested in buying. If someone is advertising a purebred dog for free or at a deeply discounted price, that’s likely to be a scam. Get detailed information about the seller, including the person or company’s full name, phone number, and postal address. Then research the seller online. See what other people are saying about their experiences. Are there complaints? Do the word “complaint” or “scam” pop up? Search online for the animal’s image. Scammers often use the same photos again and again. If the image of your cute pup or adorable kitten shows up on multiple sites, it’s a pretty good bet you’ve stumbled onto a scam. October 1 — 31, 2022 The Senior Bulletin Page 9 Social Security Column By Derek Nichols, Social Security Assistant District Manager DSM PROTECTING OUR LOVED ONES FROM ELDER ABUSE Are you concerned about protecting your older relatives and friends from elder abuse? The pandemic high- lighted the disproportionate impact of tragedy on underserved communities, including older adults, who face high rates of elder abuse, fraud, and nursing homes deaths. It’s important to remember that elder abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or financial status. We are committed to helping and preventing further victimization – espe- cially in underserved communities. Fraud A recent Federal Bureau of Investigation report showed that elder fraud has increased. Older adults in the United States reported over $1.6 billion in losses in 2021. This includes victims of COVID-related scams. Older adults in the U.S, also lose nearly 25 times more money to scammers than other groups –an estimat- ed $113.7 billion a year! Reporting fraud can be difficult and older adults tend to underre- port– especially when money is lost. Many older Americans are unsure about the reporting process or feel too embarrassed to re- port. Understaffed Adult Protective Services offices can also cause long processing times and underreporting. We work hard to protect beneficiaries from Social Security and government imposter scams. You can learn more about protecting your loved ones at blog.ssa.gov/slam-the-scam-how-to-spot-government- imposters and our Protect Yourself from Social Security Scams webpage at www.ssa.gov/scam. Did you know that Polk County provides financial counseling to Polk County residents as a public service? It’s true! In line with the county’s commitment to household economic stability, the Polk County Board of Su- pervisors started the Polk County Financial Em- powerment Center in March of 2020. Since then hundreds of individuals, from college students to young parents, and from small business owners to seniors on fixed incomes, have met with financial counselors to look for opportunities to make their budgets work better or even to resolve specific areas of concern. Delinquent accounts have decreased, credit scores have increased and collectively partici- pants have reduced non-mortgage debt by more than $2,000,000.00 while also saving more than $700,000.00 for various needs and goals! If you, or someone you care about, is trying to work their way out of financial troubles or has specific dreams and could use professional advice on how to get there, please contact the Polk County Financial Empowerment Center at 515-697-7700, or visit www.empowermoney.org/ It’s confidential, it’s professional and it’s free!

Page 18 The Senior Bulletin October 1 — 31, 2022 Ask the Naturalist Connect With Us on: Submitted by Heidi Anderson, Polk County Conservation www.leadingyououtdoors.org Q I woke up one morning to find a bunch of shallow holes in my lawn. Something was digging out there overnight. What animal do you think it may have been? A. There are two animals that cause damage to lawns this time of year, skunks and raccoons. They are trying to fatten up before winter and are searching for food like grubs and worms anyplace they can find it. Skunks create precise cone-shaped depressions approximately the size of their nose when digging. They can smell the protein rich grubs or worms just below the surface. Raccoons will use their front paws like hands to rip up and tear the sod in search of food. So unless you're seeing patches of sod ripped out, my guess is that a skunk was the guilty culprit! Family Caregiver Opportunity Iowa Caregivers is partnering with Aging Resources of Central Iowa in hosting a workshop to support and educate family caregivers. The game show themed conference is scheduled for October 10 and 11, at the FFA Enrichment Center in Ankeny and is free for those that register. Some of the informational sessions are on dementia care, foot and mouth care and how to prepare for a hospital discharge. The first day is meant to be focused on family caregiver needs, but both days have interesting topics! Registration is open and additional information can be found at information@iowacaregivers.org or call 515-223-2805. Hope to see all you caregivers there! Continued from Page 6 Consumer Advisory - Pet Scams Beware of any “transportation,” “shipping” or “customs fees.” Any unexpected fees are a sign of a scam. Always talk to the seller on the phone. Do not communicate only through texts and email. Ask the seller questions such as who their vet is and then contact the veterinarian’s office with a phone number you find on the internet, not the one they provide. If they don’t want to give you the information you’ve requested, to meet in person, or talk by phone, move on to someone else. Don’t pay with a gift card, a cash app or wire money. A sure sign of a scam is someone who insists you pay by gift card or wire transfer. Gift cards and money transfers are similar to sending cash – once you send it, it is almost impossible to get it back. Cash transfer services and apps also make it difficult to get your money back. Instead, pay by credit card. That way, if there’s a problem, your card issuer may be able to help. If you believe you’ve encountered an online pet scam, you are encouraged to report it through www.ic3.gov, a law enforcement reporting website operated jointly by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National White Collar Crime Center. You are also encouraged to file a complaint with the Iowa Attorney General’s office. To file a complaint, go here or call 515-281-5926 (in the Des Moines area) or 888-777-4590 (outside the metro area).
