to 18 (Thu.)
Religious services commemorating the anniver-
sary of the death of Nichiren, who founded the
Nichiren sect of Buddhism, have been held annu-
ally at Kishimojindo Temple since the Edo pe-
riod. In this colorful festival, votive lanterns 3-4
meters high are decorated with flowers fashioned
from paper. The towering creations are hoisted
up and carried by local residents and members of
religious associations in processions down Meiji-
dori, Mejiro-dori, Shinobazu-dori and other large
avenues (along different routes each day). This

Iwate Ginga Plaza 20th Anniversary Festival From Oct. 20 (Sat.)
to 28 (Sun.)
This festival is billed as a 20th anniversary fair
for Iwate Ginga Plaza―an “antenna shop” (retail
outlets mobilized to promote produce and crafts
from specific regions) for Iwate Prefecture spe-
cialties that debuted in 1998 and reopened this
September 21 after remodeling. The shop stocks
around 3,000 products (Morioka cold noodles,
Nanbu rice crackers, Sanriku wakame seaweed
and more). During the fair, 10% discounts will be
featured on most items (with certain exceptions),
a lottery format drawing provided for shoppers
spending 3,000 yen or more and other fun.

The 59th Tokyo Kanda Secondhand Book Festival
This Secondhand Book Festival takes place in
Kanda’s Jimbocho, a quarter legendary for its
vast number of secondhand bookstores. The main
event open-air used book market features carts
stretching over 500 meters along Yasukuni-dori
Avenue, creating a veritable “book row.” Close
to a million volumes are said to occupy the carts,
meaning that searches may yield rare old volumes
or materials. The event is popular not only with
avid Japanese readers, but also attracts plenty of
sightseers from abroad.

Emotions, Adornments, Movements
Mesmerizing Buddhist images have been passed down since
ancient times, with this exhibition focusing on the expressive
powers and sophisticated techniques of sculptors who crafted
such works. The sequence begins with “faces,” “ornamenta-
tion” and “motions and poses,” including the Wooden Statue
of the God of War and other important cultural assets. Visi-
tors are able to contemplate smiles, rage and other emotions,
radiance materializing from the Buddha’s body and other tri-
