Mission & Objectives of SESSA

MISSION
• The mission of SESSA is the creation and continued growth of an
   authoritative renewable energy forum, in Southern Africa.

OBJECTIVES
• To promote and increase the use of renewable energy with informal
   education, demonstration and information dissemination to end‐users
   and other decision makers of all levels;
• To establish the society as the main regional information centre in close
   co‐operation with similar initiatives;
• To facilitate in the creation and maintenance of appropriate standards for
   products, systems or methods and training.
• For this purpose SESSA maintains a close relationship with it’s various
   divisions, one of which is the Solar Water Heating Division.

CODE OF CONDUCT
• All members of the SESSA Solar Water Heating Division are required to
   sign a code of practice the aims of which are to assist in co‐operating,
   developing, instituting, maintaining and promoting a code of good
   conduct and practices for the division’s membership.

COMPLAINTS
• Investigate all complaints submitted in writing regarding SWHD members
   or systems
• Formalise methods in order to assist complainants

COMPLIMENTS
• Publish compliments on the SESSA website
• Use compliments for positive PR for SESSA SWHD

INHOUSE
• Further develop SWHD ‘bye laws’
• Review ‘bye laws’ against current SESSA Constitution for possible changes

LEGAL
• As standard practice, non complaint members issues will be dealt with
   through negotiation
• In the unlikely & unfortunate event of a deadlock, legal action will be
   taken

STANDARDS
• Promote and Educate consumers on SABS Standards and the need for
   regulations
• Educate SWHD members on related SANS Standards and promote and
   assist with compliance
• Represent SWH Industry on various SABS Technical Committees
• Build on the existing SANS1307 standard with new standards for
   individual collectors and components
• Assist in the development of Energy Efficiency / Performance labelling for
   Solar Water Heaters

TRAINING
• Participate with primary stake stakeholders (ESETA, CETA, SAQA, etc.) in
   the development of training standards
• Promote SWH installation training as an opportunity for training
   providers
• Source finance for developing local training infrastructure
• Contact overseas training counterparts to promote the transfer of skills
• Develop an SWH Industry skills programme through BBS (Business
   Building Seminars) incl. topics such as effective marketing, sales
   strategies, customer service etc.

COMMUNICATIONS
• Develop and implement a monthly budget for an ongoing PR campaign to
   promote SESSA SWHD
• Update SESSA website by removing barriers to entry for member and
   customer interface
• Develop a new monthly newsletter to keep members abreast of industry
   developments

ASSOCIATIONS
• Indentify various Industry Associations for possible strategic partnerships
   that would benefit SESSA SWHD

GOVERNMENT
• Continue to interact with Government with regard to SWH Industry
   matters
• Lobby Government for mandatory installations of SWH for buildings
   above a certain size & value

PARASTATALS
• Interact with and support Eskom with the current SWH Rebate
   Programme
• Source funding for the development of a sustainable and bankable
   Business Plan for SESSA SWHD

BANKS
• Contact the Banking Association of South Africa to present the case for
   the development of the SWH
• Identify opportunities / constraints for the development of SWH specific
   financing products
• Assist in developing financing products to increase the sales of SWH
• Source funding for the implementation of the SESSA SWHD Business Plan

INSURERS
• Contact the South African Insurance Association to present the case for
    the replacement of electric geysers with SWH
• Identify constraints for this implementation
• Assist in removing barriers to implementation and developing systems to
    streamline the transition to a new ‘geyser to solar’ client offering
• Offer assistance in developing criteria for becoming a registered product
    suppliers or service provider
