MESSAGE BY THE
PRESIDENT
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the First Edition of
Maldives Travel Agents Guide, published by Maldives Associa-
tion of Travel Agents and Tour Operators, MATATO.
This publication marks another milestone for MATATO, as we
are establishing an exclusive platform for our general members
to market and promote their business. This publication also
adds value to our membership, to have the opportunity to be
listed on a curated guide endorsed by the industry. Maldives
Travel Agents Guide will be published annually, and distributed
in all major international travel exhibitions and travel trade
fairs, in addition to local distribution to all resorts and
guesthouses operated in Maldives.
2017 was another remarkable year for Maldives tourism;
arrivals grew by 8% while operational bed capacity increased

numbers, the industry is flourishing and there is momentum

As an organization that thrives for the empowerment of
Maldivians in tourism, MATATO is honored to be at the
forefront of the industry, leading with progressive ideas and
initiatives that contribute to this united effort by all stakeholder
to take the industry forward.

MALDIVES TRAVEL AGENTS’ GUIDE 2018
Maldives is said to have got its name derived from Sinhalese (necklace
Islands), which is also believed to be spoken by the ancestors who first
settled in this garland of more than twelve hundred islands scattered
across the Indian Ocean. Some historians believe that the earliest
settlements in Maldives dates back to 2500 years, credited to fishermen,
travelling from the coasts of India and Sri Lanka. Over the next centuries
that came, these islands would witness the birth of a culture, a language a
history that tells tales of kings and queens with powerful dynasties, of
occupations by imperial forces and of brave heroes who triumphed
victory against invading powers. Maldivians, for a long time in history,
practiced Buddhism, until 12th century, when a traveling Arab scholar
saved the islands from a mythical sea monster and converted nation to
Islam. With a history no less dramatic than that of most countries in the
world, Maldives emerges to be one of the most developed and most
celebrated nations in the Asia Pacific region.

Spread across 35 miles in 26 atolls, only a handful of the thousand two hundred islands are inhabited by a population of nearly 400,000 people. Administratively, all the islands are grouped into 21 atolls. We are a democratic Republic with an elected president as the Head of the State. Natives of the islands are identified as Maldivians who speak a language of their own. Yes. That’s true. Maldivians speak a language that, only less than 400,000 people speak. Not just that, an alphabet of our own and multiple dialects to go with it. When speaking, we sound similar to Sri Lankans, but a good portion of the language is also influenced by Arabic. Maldivians celebrate a rich culture that is unique to different parts of the country, from way of life, livelihood and cuisine. Today more than a million tourists visit Maldives each year. Tourism is spread across the nation, with resorts, hotels, and guesthouses in almost every atoll. Until late 90s tourism was concentrated only around Kaafu atoll where the capital city and international airport is located. However, with developments in transportation, introduction of sea planes and development of domestic airports have the whole country more easily accessible for travelers.
