Message from the Grandmaster
WTSDA & 2021
A s the year 2020 marched towards its conclusion, two of the seven tenets of Tang Soo Do, perseverance
and indomitable spirit, characterized much about the vitality of the World Tang Soo Do Association
and its membership in accepting and overcoming many challenging events. January brought great sadness
with the death of Grandmaster Robert Beaudoin. Yet, even with our grief in the passing of this great man
and the loss of his vast knowledge of Tang Soo Do gained through his long-standing historical relationship
with our founder, Grandmaster Jae C. Shin, we celebrated his life as one of the greatest martial artists of
his generation. His perseverance to ensure the health of the Association when Grandmaster Shin died is
acknowledged. His spirit lives on in the mind of the Association.
In February, COVID-19 began its relentless, infectious path across the country, affecting the very fabric
of our society. For an activity that relies on face-to-face training, closing studios to reduce the impact and spread of the virus
wreaked havoc on our membership and the viability of many studios. However, through necessity and perserverance, instructors
accepted the challenges by developing and offering remote instruction primarily through Zoom. Having developed and taught
distant learning courses at the university level, I know how much time and effort it takes to manage this kind of teaching.
Many instructors across all of the WTSDA regions not only taught their classes by Zoom, and in some cases organized clinics
for the entire membership. From Quito, Ecuador, Region 23 Director Master Sebastian Bonelli scheduled clinics for Black Belts
and Masters. From Mar del Plata, Argentina, a team of women offered monthly Fem Classes. Region 19 Director Master Roy
Uttech from Alaska arranged training for Masters’ Clinic candidates. In the fall, Testing Committee chair Master Paul Mimidis
had planned and successfully executed virtual testing of Masters’ Candidates and Ko Dan Ja.
The COVID-19 pandemic persisted through the 2020 year, yet the work of the Association progressed in a novel manner,
led by the indomitable spirit of its membership. Virtual training will continue into 2021 along with hopes that the effects of the
recently released vaccines will allow us to train together in-person sooner rather than later.
I applaud all of you who worked purposely through these pandemic stricken nomths to find wad to manage and nurture your
respective Regions, studios and membership. We will be ready to return to a new normal when it is safe. In the meantime, we
will maintain and show our love of Tang Soo Do into the future regardless of the method of instruction. Thank you for your
perseverance and indomitable spirit!

Virtual Master Training
N ew challenges and opportunities await the WTSDA in 2021 and one exciting opportunity is the Virtual Masters’ Training
sessions. These sessions will provide the highest level of training from our most senior Masters, which in the past were only
available at Masters Clinics. Monthly virtual meetings are open to those who have reached the rank of Sah Dan/Sah Dan Master
or higher, or have been invited to the WTSDA Master’s Clinic. Meetings are approximate 90 minutes long and are scheduled
during the best time to allow most Masters around the world to attend. On January 9, 2021, the first Master’s Virtual Training
Zoom meeting was held with Grandmaster Strong leading the training. Almost 200 Ko Dan Ja from all regions of the world were
in attendance. Grandmaster Strong shared the concepts of techniques applied through our hyung and philosophy emphasizing
body, mind and spirit. Future training topics and schedules will be posted on the private Facebook page. Registration is required
before each monthly session. Special thank you to Master Roy Uttech and Ms. Pamela Russell for organizing these training sessions
and Master Jordan Chappell for the photographs of the attendees of the first session used on the cover of this issue.
Master Martha Heise - New Region 8 Director
M
artha L. Heise has been named as the new Region 8 Director. She began training in the WTSDA
in 1997 and received her Cho Dan in 2000 under Master Randall Kuehner. She taught classes until
forming Rising Phoenix Tang Soo Do when Master Kuehner moved to Region 7 in 2003. She received her
Sah Dan Masters rank in 2015. Master Heise’s prior service include Region 8 Instructors Class secretary,
Region 8 Scholarship Committee member, Region 8 event team, in a number of security roles for regional
and world events, and WTSD50 Strategic Planning Committee member. Master Heise has had a varied career
outside martial arts within biological research and development, IT, project management, and education
and is currently a licensed massage therapist. She is grateful for the opportunities to interact with generous,
talented seniors, peers, and students who have fueled her passion, growth, and desire to share with others.
Master Heise looks forward to new opportunities to support our Association and Region 8 family and build on the strong heritage,
abundant creativity, and dedication within our Association.
Master Cláudio Temporário - Mozambique Country Director
M
aster Cláudio Temporário became the Mozambique Country Director in 2021. Master Temporário
was born in Maputo, Mozambique. Since the age of 5 Master Temporário has studied in a variety of
martial arts until he started Tang Soo Do training at Master Alex Goule’s Moz Tang Soo Do Studio in 2000
and was an instructor from 2003 to 2009. He achieved his Cho Dan in 2004 and in 2017 he tested for Sah
Dan Master. In 2011, he officially opened his own dojang in Maputo city and in 2014 he dedicate himself
to his school full time. Master Temporário achieved several qualifications in national and international
competitions: three titles as African champion and one as national champion stand out. He has held several
administrative positions in the Mozambican Association of Tang Soo Do including chairman of the general
assembly, chairman of technical council and Vice President of the Direction. As the Chief instructor and
new Mozambique Country Director, Master Temporário explains that he couldn’t be happier by serving the World Tang Soo Do
Association and Mozambique with pride and honor, while still doing what he loves the most, teaching Tang Soo Do.

As we left the city for the countryside, it was like we were going back in time. We visited the Liu family temple, which as like a
family mausoleum for generations of the Liu family. In the courtyard of the temple, Grandmaster and I demonstrate Tang Soo
Do forms, and Master Liu taught Grandmaster spear techniques. It was a magical experience which is difficult to describe, all I
can say it is was like being in an old Kung Fu film.
After the demonstration, we headed back to our hotel and prepared for the filmed interview with Grandmaster Beaudoin. During
the interview one of the most shocking things to discover was that traditional Chinese Martial Arts are disappearing in China.
The number of people practicing traditional Ki Gong is significantly decreased. Young people are pursing study of English and
Academics in order to get ahead. When I came to China in 1993, the majority of people were studying Ki Gong and Wushu, I
was shocked to hear that BJJ and Tae Kwon Do are the two most commonly practiced martial arts in China’s cities. Grandmaster
was deeply saddened to hear that even though Master Liu demonstrated amazing martial arts skills earlier in the day, he was in
poor enough health that documentary director Mr. Yang Xu feared Liu Jin Zu would not survive to see the documentary when
it aired. Grandmaster expressed that perhaps we could bring one of the grandson’s and the film crew to the US to see the 2020
World Championships. The next day we did Ki Gong in a park and did a little shopping before heading through the desert to
the Lanzhou Airport. We were surprised to see Master Liu and his family at the airport with a banner of eternal friendship and
complete compilation of Bamen Chuans forms and techniques for Grandmaster Beaudoin. The video is currently available to

International Dan Classes
D ue to the COVID-19 pandemic hitting all regions of the world, all WTSDA events were cancelled
for the safety of its membership. In an effort to maintain our training and strengthen the bonds of
brotherhood, the idea of an international virtual class was born. With Grandmaster Strong’s approval,
we began planning a series of international virtual classes using Zoom with our first class held on April
11. The class was overwhelmingly successful with twenty classes offered and some sessions had over
400 participants. Each classes lasted about two hours and covered a wide variety of topics such as
the technical aspects of hyung, cardio workouts and relaxation (Ki Gong). Attendance in the virtual
classes had representatives from all over the USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panama, Puerto
Rico, Aruba, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, South Africa, Mozambique, Seychelles Island,
Holland, England, Iceland and Germany. In addition to the great training and learning opportunity,
the classes also became a psychological support for many of us during this difficult year. Seeing our
spirits stay strong each week and realizing we are in this together has made our love for WTSDA burn
stronger. This class inspired two additional international virtual classes. The first is a monthly virtual
class for Latino Masters and Master candidates from Regions 12, 18 and 23 has been developed with
assistance from Master Fredy Burgos and Master Richardo Valdez. The second is a women’s virtual
Fem class initiated by women Black Belts from Mar del Plata, Argentina including Aldana Amaya, Macarena Nartallo, Daniela
Barrilari, Yoselie Jiménez and Andrea Crupkin and supported by their instructor, Master Pablo Pieropan. The first class held on
July 10, 2020 and was followed by six more monthly classes. Participants were from Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, USA,
Nicaragua, Panamá, Guatemala, Puerto Rico and South Africa. All of these classes have also resulted in a sense of unity while
improving our Tang Soo Do. Lastly, I want to give special thanks to KCN Strong, Masters, Black Belts and CDB for keeping the
WTSDA flame alive in our hearts and for giving us some quality time together.

Regional Updates
2020 Region 1 Virtual Championship
I t was October 3, 2020 and tournament time! How exciting that we were able to have so many participants in this virtual Regional
Championship who wouldn’t normally be able to attend. Region 1 competitors from Hawaii, Montana, Washington, Oregon,
Nevada and California as well as competitors from Alaska, Florida and Delaware were in attendance. Grandmaster Strong from
Alabama even joined us! Beds, sofas, boxes, and patio furniture were moved so that backyards, basements, garages, and bedrooms
could become competition rings. Included with the parental and sibling spectators were pets that were completely oblivious to the
weapons being wielded just inches from their tails with exquisite accuracy. The video was choppy at times and sometimes judges
had to extrapolate the beauty of the techniques through the blurs of technology. All in all, the first Region 1 Virtual Regional
Championship was a remarkable experience. Congratulations to all the competitors and THANK YOU to the organizers! It was
a grand time seeing everyone on Zoom doing their very best and having fun!

Perseverance Through a Pandemic & WTSDA Indomitable Spirit
T he year 2020 has been the epitome of adversity with many trials and tribulations for the entire world. In late January, the
WTSDA experienced the sudden loss of our beloved Grandmaster Beaudoin, which sent many into a state of shock, disbelief,
and sunken spirits. Then in late February, the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic began which drastically changed our day-to-
day lives for the foreseeable future. As a result, all sanctioned WTSDA events were cancelled, including the March 2020 Region
9 Championship. Everyone has been forced to adapt to this new normal and find creative alternative ways to operate. Although
we are expected to practice social distancing and stay apart to stop the spread of COVID-19, the virtual world has allowed us to
stay connected and in some cases get closer than we were before.
It has also opened up the door for new ways to hold larger events such as seminars and championships. Inspired by the
successful virtual championships held in Regions 1 and 5, Region 9 decided to hold one of its own on November 13-14, the
38th anniversary of the WTSDA Charter Convention. The Region 9 Virtual Championship was conducted using Zoom with
three Zoom meetings running in parallel, the main room (which served as the virtual head table) as well as two breakout rooms.
Competitors were permitted to compete from home as well as from their home dojang, referred to as a “hub”. The hub concept
had the benefit of creating the feel of an in-person championship and also allowed the competitors without proper space or
technology at home to participate safely. The divisions were scheduled to begin at specific times so competitors knew when to
log into the Zoom meeting or arrive at their hub. All hubs, competitors, judges, and scorekeepers logged into the main room at
their assigned time and were assigned to the corresponding breakout room. From there, the divisions ran in the same manner as
they would as if we were fully in person. There were three events, empty hand hyung, weapon hyung, and breaking. Black Belts
competed on Friday night and all other ranks competed on Saturday, which began with some greetings and well wishes from
Grandmaster Strong that were read by Master Jennifer Couture.
When it was all said and done, there were a total of 155 competitors from Region 9 as well as several competitors from Region
8. Aside from some minor glitches in technology and logistics initially, the Region 9 Virtual Championship ran smoothly thanks
to the planning committee and all of the silent warriors who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. As with all WTSDA events,
spirit and energy were high and the feeling of camaraderie and family were strong. The Region 9 Virtual Championship is yet
another example of the perseverance and indomitable spirit of the WTSDA both of which remain relentless, even in the midst
of a pandemic.

The schedule for 2020 was awesome, and then we went on lock down. But we took a breath and went virtual. Despite the
pandemic, we have been working hard. Ki Gong instructors having been hosting Zoom classes all over the world from their
living rooms. We had a two-day Ki Gong event in July with over 100 participants. A new comprehensive Ki Gong manual is being
written with a scheduled completion date of World Championships 2022. The 2021 schedule is still in development and will be
announced on the website: www.worldkigong.com.
