Uterine Sound, Dilator &Thread Retriever
Pelican Uterine Sound
• Gently insert the Uterine Sound to determine the depth
and direction of the uterine cavity. It may be necessary
to grasp the cervix with a Tenaculum or Vulsellum to
align the cervical canal with the uterine cavity.
• Apply gentle traction to straighten and cervical
curvature
• Withdraw the Uterine Sound. The length from the
interior fundus to the external cervical os can be
measured directly using graduations indicated on the
body of the sound.

Pelican Dilator
• Hold the Dilator in the middle at the thumb hold.
• Choose which size end you wish to use – the sizes are
engraved either side of the thumb hold.
• For coil fitting it is advisable to use the smaller end first.
• Both ends are tapered to allow the Dilator to pass
smoothly and comfortably into the uterine cavity. Force
should not be applied when dilating the cervix as this
could cause serious injury.

Pelican Thread Retriever
• Carefully insert the Thread Retriever into the uterine cavity
• Thoroughly but softly “sound” the uterus to determine the presence
or absence of an IUD
• If an IUD is located, rotate the Thread Retriever and with gentle
pressure sweep the posterior wall and at the same time gradually
and slowly withdraw the Thread Retriever. In this way the threads
may be picked up and brought into view at the external os.
• The procedure can be repeated and the anterior and lateral walls
can be swept.
• When the threads have been brought into view the IUD may be
removed or left in situ for further follow up.
