A sense of inspiration will overcome you as you admire the views overlooking Sète, the sea and the vast expanse of the Thau Lagoon, the largest of a string of lakes that stretches along the Languedoc-Roussillon. The lagoon has created exceptionally diverse ecosystems and is a rich source of oyster and mussel farming. At the summit of Mount St. Clair, visit the chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette, built in 1861 on the ancient site of the fortress constructed by Louis XIII and still an important place of pilgrimage. Located 22 miles south of Barcelona, Sitges was once a fishing village and is today known as home to a few renowned artists in residence, Barcelona’s Film Festival and a unique Carnival festival. The most predominant one found all over Barcelona is early 20th-century Modernism Art, also known as Art Nouveau. The most impressive and renowned of these are Antoni Gaudí’s designs. The Catalan architect ordered his masterpieces to be built in this city, the capital of Catalonia. Your tour includes a visit inside La Sagrada Familia, a famous cathedral with spectacular architectural features that inspire awe in all who come see it. Along the way, marvel in the panoramic view of Gaudí’s Casa Milà and Casa Batlló, among other monuments. Explore the beautiful Old Town of Valencia and learn how it was a major trading post along the Silk Road. What was once the major art college of La Seda today has become the Museum of Fine Art, preserving within its walls some true jewels of artisan manufacturing. After your visit, you will have the opportunity to do some shopping in the specialized stores that continue to work silk. Catch a glimpse of the Gothic-style building of La Lonja de la Seda before entering the Central Market and enjoying a tasting of horchata, a beverage made of tiger nuts, and fartons, a traditional Valencian sweet bread. Your last stop will be the Church of San Nicolas. It stands among the best examples of coexistence of various styles found in the city of Valencia, including a Gothic structure from the 15th century with Baroque decoration from the 17th century. Enjoy the views of the most southerly point in Europe, site of the Trinity Lighthouse. Step back in time to the year of 1940 when Britain was at war with Germany and Italy and the future of Gibraltar looked bleak. A decision was taken by Winston Churchill and the British Military leaders to construct a massive network of tunnels. Experience these World War II Tunnels as your guide takes you on a journey through this amazing fortress. Visit the areas that housed the hospital, power station, military headquarters and accommodation for nearly 10,000 troops and civilians. On a clear day, the views of Spain are spectacular from Jock’s Balcony lookout point. You’ll have free time to enjoy the display of photographic images, depicting life as it was in the 1940’s. NOTE: At the Fortress, a health and safety briefing will be given, and hard-hats will be provided. There is a steep incline to be negotiated upon exiting the tunnels. GIB305 THE BUNKERS OF THE ISTHMUS JUNE 6, 2022 | 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM 3 HOURS $119pp Travel north across Gibraltar’s unique runway to the remarkable border that separates the Spanish mainland form the small British overseas territory. Cross the border to Spain and make your way over to the eye-catching bunkers of La Linea, Spain. Built during the second World War, they are a system of fortifications designed to thwart any possible offensive action that could be launched from Gibraltar and prevent flanking operations on the nearby coasts. This is a chance to immerse yourself in the history of WWII from Gibraltar’s opposition at the time. Experience the feel of what life might have been like during these times as you enter the bunkers. Continue to the fort of Santa Barbara. As you walk around the bunkers of Santa Barbara, you will be able to witness spectacular views of the East side of the rock and get a grasp of its vastness in comparison to its surroundings. Make your way to Plaza de Armas of San Benito, which still contains the original fortification wall, and see the magnificent craftsmanship of that era that still stands to this very day. Depart the Hotel by motor coach for a drive to the Cathedral of Porto, whose interior reveals eclecticism through a wealth of diverse materials. Although this was originally a Gothic church, it has been transformed into one of the city’s most important Baroque works. Next, visit the Stock Exchange Palace, a 19th- century gem of Arab and European design with a fantastic Moorish hall. You’ll then cross the Douro River heading to a well-known port wine cellar where you will taste this legendary local product. After the tasting you will head to the Hotel to freshen up and prepare for an unforgettable, traditional dinner with Fado. The highlight of the night, O Fado, Intangible Heritage of Humanity, crowns the show with the voice of the city’s great fado singers, featuring a unique and striking moment that will expose it to the ex libris of Portugal. The party continues with the Folklore Ranch, to the rhythm of traditional dances inspired and born in the roots of the people of the North. At the end, after the group photos, transport waits to take you to your hotel and dream of your next visit! DAY 2: The wine valleys of the Douro and its tributaries provide some of the most spectacular scenery in Portugal, and the spectacular winding gorge of the Douro Valley itself is the most beautiful of all. Enjoy a leisurely train tour through this magnificent countryside speckled with granite houses and wrought-iron balconies to Portugal’s wine country. After a short walk, embark on a cruise on the Douro River aboard a Rabelo boat and discover breathtaking landscapes while enjoying a glass of wine and appetizers. Along its route, the Douro River passes through places known for the production of wines, cherries, and almonds. Lunch will be served on board, and you will be able to experience a unique view with exquisite food. Your tour ends back in Porto after this memorable day! DAY 3: Have breakfast, then check out of your hotel and take a scenic ride down to Coimbra, birthplace of six Portuguese kings and home to one of Europe’s oldest universities. There you will visit the University’s Library and chapel after a small sightseeing tour through downtown. Afterwards visit Fátima, the shrine where on the 13th of May 1917, the Virgin Mary appeared to three little shepherds and where the shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima was erected. Fátima is now a world center of pilgrimage that takes place chiefly on the 13th of May and the 13th of October. Your guide will explain how to get around in the sanctuary and surroundings. You will be given free time in this spiritual highlight to explore and shop for souvenirs. Enjoy a wonderful lunch in a local restaurant before being transferred to the airport.
