Investing IN THE FUTURE OF SOUTH AFRICA

Since the inception of the organization in 2003, Founder and Chairman,
Francois Pienaar has had an inspiring vision to provide educational access
to deserving scholars with leadership potential (but who face economic
and other barriers) through an individualised and personal approach.
Therefore, MAD Leadership Foundation focuses on the whole individual,
ensuring that our scholarship recipients not only succeed academically
but exhibit personal success and positive social engagement traits.

We strive towards equity when it comes to educational opportunities in
South Africa, where not only those who can afford a quality education
have access to it but also the talented young people who lack financial
and other resources. Through the comprehensive, personal and long-term
support we offer our scholars, we develop alumni of MAD Leadership
Foundation Fellows who will invest back into South Africa and who will be a
force for positive change in their unique way and leaders in their own right.

With your support, whether it be an event attendee, auction bidder,
sponsor or as a volunteer mentor, every contribution is getting us closer
to our ambitious goal of supporting 1000 young leaders through our
scholarship programme.

For more information about our Scholarship Programme, please visit
WWW.MADLEADERSHIP.ORG.

If you would like to become a mentor or a scholar sponsor, please contact
us on wilmari@madleadership.org, and we will facilitate your generous
contribution.

Owen Claassen
 TREE OF LIFE

                       LIVE

 DESCRIPTION OF ART
Owen Claassen was commissioned by MAD Leadership Foundation to
create a piece that resembles power, presence, strength and grace.
Like MAD Leadership Foundation, this Baobab tree creates a safe, silent
space for the young girl reading in its shadow. From its roots to its leaves,
the Baobab is built with a purpose. This tree is made not only to survive but
to thrive in the hardest environments. This symbolism is a reflection of the
MAD Leadership Foundation scholars and the leadership programme.
The programme has been carefully crafted to have a sustainable long-
term impact on the future generations of South Africa by supporting
 tomorrow’s leaders today.

 ABOUT THE ARTIST
Owen Claassen, affectionately known as the Karoo Michaelangelo, was
born and still resides in Zoar in the Klein Karoo, South Africa. Since early
childhood, he was very crafty and made the best toy cars for his friends
using scrap metal and wire. In high school, he had Woodwork as one of
his subjects but soon discovered that he was much more interested in
welding. Claassen worked for different welding companies, and in his
spare time, he made metal figurines, candle holders, and bedside lamps,
using themes from his cultural background. Claassen’s early childhood
memories and the known familiar world around him serve as inspiration
for his artwork. His work can be seen in many of the prominent art galleries
in South Africa. His work has a colloquial emphasis, beautifully depicting
life inspired by the Karoo platteland.

Christy Lee Rogers
 EBB AND FLOW

               LIVE
 DESCRIPTION OF ART
The Muses collection is about the beauty and vulnerability of being human. The
intentions for all of my work start with a desire to express a sense of wonder and
tranquility beyond what we see here in reality; and to create a sanctuary for
the viewer, a place separate from the chaos of the world, where it’s safe to
dream. Shot underwater in Hawaii, the colors, cascading bodies and contrasts
of light and darkness were utilized to create movement and purpose within each
scene, and ask questions about our existence. My perspective from outside the
water, looking in and using the surface of a pool as a canvas, allows for beautiful
natural effects like the refraction of light, soft bubbles and imperfections.

 ABOUT THE ARTIST
Christy Lee Rogers is a visual artist from Kailua, Hawaii. Her obsession with water
as a medium for breaking the conventions of contemporary photography has
led to her work being compared to Baroque painting masters like Caravaggio.
Boisterous in color and complexity, Rogers applies her cunning technique to a
barrage of bodies submerged in water during the night, and creates her effects
using the refraction of light. Through a fragile process of experimentation, she
builds elaborate scenes of coalesced colors and entangled bodies that exalt
the human character as one of vigor and warmth, while also capturing the
beauty and vulnerability of the tragic experience that is the human condition.

Rogers’ works have been exhibited globally from Paris, London, Italy, Mexico
City to Shanghai, Sao Paulo, South Africa, Los Angeles and more, and are held
in private and public collections throughout the world. She has been featured
in International Magazines, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar Art China, Elle
Decoration, Global Times, The Independent, Casa Vogue, Photo Technique,
Photo Korea and others. Rogers’ “Reckless Unbound” is currently housed at
Longleat House in the UK; the stately home, which is the seat of the Marquesses
of Bath and also home to Renaissance gems of the Italian masters, like Titan’s
“Rest on the Flight into Egypt.” Rogers’ art has been featured on several album
covers, and her images were selected for the 2013–2014 performance season of
the Angers-Nantes Opera in France. In 2019 she won Open Photographer of the
Year at the Sony World Photography Awards.

ABOUT THE ITEM
KEN FORRESTER

Ken Forrester Vineyards is situated on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain, in the
heart of South Africa’s most famous wine region, Stellenbosch. The vineyards are
commonly referred to as the “Home of Chenin Blanc” and other premium award-
winning wines. Over the years, a range of top quality wines has received massive
national and international acclaim with hundreds of awards and accolades. Their
wines are broadly available in famous restaurants and exported around the globe.
Ken Forrester’s philosophy has always been to create a range of handcrafted,
individually made wines that suitably complement a wide variety of food styles and
provide excellent value.

LE VIN DE FRANÇOIS

Chateau Naudé Wine Creation is a family wine business, inspired by François Naudé
senior’s passion for “MAGIC” wine, based in the Western Cape region of South Africa.
Founded by the Naudé family in 2006, it produces wines of exceptional quality.

A bottle of “The Ultimate Pinotage”, created by blending up to ten of the very best
wines, from the most prestigious producers of the variety, to show the intensity of
colour, fragrance and flavour, without sacrificing elegance. The wine has complexity,
good palate weight and a long finish, with layers of interest and with the final blend
being greater than any of the individual parts. This classic-style wine can age for
many years and is regarded as a collector’s item.

Included with the wines is a quirky Carrol Boyes wine rack that sits beautifully on any
countertop.

 DESCRIPTION OF ART
The artwork titled “Outspoken” is about a person or people who are not
afraid to speak their mind. They are not afraid to say things that many
people are afraid to say. “My father, Johannes Maswanganyi, is one of
the Outspoken people. I think that is the reason he is a successful artist.
I came up with the idea to create this piece because of him.” - Collen
 Maswanganyi

 ABOUT THE ARTIST

in the footsteps of his father Johannes Maswanganyi and his late uncle
Piet Mafemani Maswanganyi, a well-known carver.

Maswanganyi studied Fine Arts at the then Witwatersrand Technikon.

 England and China.

Haidee Nel
  I N FA N T R Y I : G I R L S E R I E S

                          LIVE
DESCRIPTION OF ART
The birth of Haidee Nel’s two beautiful girls was inspiration enough for the
Infantry I series. The question arises, “How can I protect innocence from a
corrupt, violent world?”
Nel became aware of the harsh reality of escalating violence against
children, which urged her to create imaginative, yet empowering sculptures
of young children. Masked by their playfulness, these works question the
certainty of our children’s future. The work started off being primarily centred
on the narratives of little girls and as an artist interrogating social issues around
violence against young children.
This is the first series in the ‘Infantry’ body of work, which is the ‘silent voice’ of
these tainted children. Figures, standing at attention, fists clenched, defiant
against their vulnerability. The child is rising up against the harsh reality, unsure
if this battle can be fought.
As an individual, Nel feels incapacitated to change the world, but by using
her artistic voice, she could create awareness and reflect this reality. In Nel’s
mind, the sculptures became monuments to all who find themselves at the
front-line of this battle, whether child or ‘adult child’.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Haidee Nel is an award-winning contemporary South African sculptor,
installation artist and performance artist who lives and works in Swellendam,
South Africa. She received a BFA Honours Degree from the University of Cape
Town, Michaelis School of Fine Arts with the ‘Dean’s Merit List Award’ for
academic performance. She has participated in over 40 group exhibitions
and three major solo exhibitions and recently made her debut in Paris,
Europe, and Chicago. She mostly works in wood, cement, metal, fabric and
resin and enjoys playing with colour and texture.

Phulani Liebenberg
 MALEIKE

                      LIVE

 DESCRIPTION OF ART
The artwork “Maleike” depicts a combination of ethnicities. Liebenberg
makes use of the eyes of a German girl, the mouth of an African girl
and the nose of an Asian lady. Each painting she creates has its own
combination to represent all the strong women from our Rainbow nation.

 ABOUT THE ARTIST
Phulani Liebenberg captures the beauty, strength and raw emotions of
the people in her paintings. Combining different ethnicities, her models
are designed to reflect the cultures of all the people living in South Africa.
Liebenberg is a self-taught painter born and raised in the Eastern Cape
of South Africa. Her focus is mainly African portraiture. Oil based, large
 scale paintings.
“I am drawn to the challenges of capturing the ‘life’ and emotion of
the subject’s eyes. I love the process of breaking down the overall
composition into the separate elements that harness human emotion,
and how the smallest changes in each, affect the mood and feeling
in my work. I see each subject as a synergy of intense complex aspects
that perfectly capture and preserve emotion, expression, concern and
 wonder.”
Her paintings are her perspective of a beautiful continent and its people,
the roles we play as Africans and the wonderful ways in which we do so.
Phulani is represented at Tanya Baxter Contemporary Art Gallery in
London, where she exhibits some of her artwork.

Frances Goodman
  PINK GRIN, 2018

LIVE

  DESCRIPTION OF ART
Frances Goodman examines the impact and influences the media, and
the film industry has on the formation of desire and desirability through
repetition in her sequin lips series. We are all familiar with the disembodied
glossy, luscious, lips that are plastered across billboards and magazines.
They are, in essence, the signifier of the desirable body: the unattainable,
mirage of perfection that teases and taunts us. Goodman’s sequin
lips ripple and shimmer, refusing to hold their form, while remaining
disembodied (w)holes: they are both iconic and ironic. Just as lipstick is
applied to be smudged off, the image does not hold.

  ABOUT THE ARTIST
Frances Goodman is a multimedia artist born in Johannesburg, South
Africa, who works with objects such as acrylic nails, false eyelashes,
sequins, and jewellery to create sculptural and relief works. By employing
these materials and efforts, Goodman’s artworks draw attention to
popular culture definitions that narrow the possibilities of female identity
to extremes of consumption, aspiration, obsession, desire, and anxiety.
Though her work reflects a society in which objects can define and
burden people, it also celebrates the use of these materials as symbols
  of empowerment.

WHY SHOULD THINGS

                                                 SILENT
DESCRIPTION OF ART
The work raises the question, “why
should things be in order?” This is after
realising that not everyone gets what
they want at the same pace or at the
time that it ought to be. The social
construct is that once you are done
with university, the job follows, followed
by meeting ‘the one’, marriage,
children, and so on. Unfortunately, it is
not the case for most people, and the
pressure does not seem to subside.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
In 2015 and 2016 Banele Khoza was
a top 100 finalists in the L’Atelier
competition and in 2017 he was
awarded the South Africa Taxi
Foundation Art Award (overall
winner) and the Gerard Sekoto
Award for Note Making. His series

 LIFT OFF

 DESCRIPTION OF ART SILENT
The artwork depicts a pig looking up
at a balloon floating in the sky. The
balloon is tethered by a rope that
has been tied around the pig’s body.
Pigs are known in natural conditions
to live close to the soil. Its habits and
demeanour have inspired us to various
 interpretations of its character. The
weightlessness of the balloon in the
air, contrast with the mass of the pig.
It lies in anticipation to be lifted off the
ground. There is a playfulness in the
 depiction of a fantastical aspiration.

and the known familiar world around him
serve as inspiration for his artwork.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Owen Claassen, affectionately known
as the Karoo Michaelangelo, was born
and still resides in Zoar in the Klein Karoo,
South Africa. Since early childhood, he
was very crafty and made the best toy
cars for his friends using scrap metal and
wire. In high school, he had Woodwork as
one of his subjects but soon discovered
that he was much more interested in
Welding. Claassen worked for different
Welding Companies, and in his spare time,
he made metal figurines, candle holders,
and bedside lamps, using themes from
his cultural background. Claassen’s early
childhood memories and the known familiar
world around him serve as inspiration for
his artwork. His work can be seen in many
of the prominent art galleries in South
Africa. His work has a colloquial emphasis,
beautifully depicting life inspired by the
Karoo platteland.

Inverroche
 SOUTH AFRICAN GIN
                                        SILENT
DESCRIPTION OF ITEM
750ML INVERROCHE GIN AMBER
Infused with fynbos from the coastal region and dunes of the Cape Floral Kingdom,
Inverroche Gin Amber is a rich and aromatic, amber coloured gin with fresh citrus,
slight juniper, sweet toffee apples and delicate floral notes which intertwine to deliver
a dry, woody finish.
750ML INVERROCHE GIN CLASSIC
Infused with fynbos from the limestone-rich soils of the low lands of the Cape Floral
Kingdom, Inverroche Gin Classic is crispy and dry with upfront green, grassy juniper
notes which blend seamlessly with a bouquet of soft flowers on the nose. Redolent of
summer citrus, rose petals and assertive florals, delivering a clean, dry and spicy finish.

As the pioneers of South African craft gin, Inverroche Distillery was founded by Lorna
Scott and her family. Growing from strength to strength in the local community of Still
Bay in the Western Cape of Southern Africa. In just 6 years, the distillery has grown
from a small home industry to a flourishing and pioneering craft distillery. A distillery
that is invested in its community and producing world class gins and spirits.

Musgrave
     SOUTH AFRICAN GIN

                                     SILENT
DESCRIPTION OF ITEM
750ML MUSGRAVE PINK GIN
Musgrave Pink Gin has all of the spice and flavour of Musgrave 11 but is toned down to be
gentler and less spicy and to bring out the floral of the rosehips and the infused rosewater.
From a bygone era to today, the rose is symbol of love and passion. Rose-scented oils
still grace festive occassions, and exotic rosewater exalts our food and beauty regimes.
Musgrave pink celebrates the flower of love and beauty with the source of the rose,
rosehip, which complement Musgrave’s spicy nature. It is then infused with rose water for
its timeless perfume and romance.
750ML MUSGRAVE ORIGINAL GIN
Musgrave Gin is born out of the flavours and history of Africa and its ancient spice route.
Musgrave Premium is no ordinary gin and its top notes of aromatic Cardamom, African
Ginger (Whitei Mondei) and Grains of Paradise are reminiscent of the perfume of spice
markets.
Maurice Boon Musgrave, grandfather of founder Simone Musgrave, left Plymouth in 1949
bound for Africa to start a new life exploring and discovering the people and land of
Africa. From then onward an African family would take on the adventure Maurice had
started. The spirit of endevour, adventure and courage lives on in granddaughter, Simone,
guardian of Maurice’s passion for the unusual.
Musgrave Gin is no ordinary spirit - it is an artisan gin celebrated for its top notes of
Cardamom, African Ginger and Grains of Paradise.
• All alcohol purchased on auction has to be collected by the buyer on the day - alcohol
cannot be delivered to buyers after the event.

MAD Leadership Foundation
 C O L L A B O R AT I O N P L AT E S

Since its inception, MAD Leadership Foundation has showcased and
featured both upcoming and well-known South African artists at our
 national and international fundraising events.
Over the years, we have been humbled by the many artists who have
donated their art for our auctions. We have seen these artists grow
in their professions and yet remain dedicated to always contributing
 where they can.
In 2013, we launched an art collaboration project. Each year a
group of scholars collaborated with a talented South African artist
to create a distinctive piece of art to be used as part of an exclusive
series of unique, ceramic plates. We partnered with Mervyn Gers, an
internationally acclaimed ceramicist, to create this bespoke range
of handmade ceramic plates, a must-have collectable range for art
 lovers.
