GROWTH IN AUSTRALIA
GROWTH IN AUSTRALIA
Businesses seeking expansion worldwide should
look to Equinix in Australia.
With interconnection emerging as a catalyst of revenue growth, many businesses are
reinventing their IT architecture to keep up with the trend. Interconnection establishes
direct, secure, physical or virtual connections between an enterprise and its partners,
customers and employees. In our increasingly connected world, where businesses rely
on each other to create value, enterprise leaders increasingly see interconnection as a
critical revenue growth driver. In the recent Enterprise of the Future survey of 1,000 global
IT decision makers, it was found that Australia is one of the leading countries pursuing
interconnection, with 77% of its businesses intending to be interconnected by 2017.
Most strategies implemented by businesses to drive critical revenue growth are heavily
dependent on interconnection:
• 79% in Australia are creating new channels or strategies related to customer, partner
and employee engagement, such as digital, social and mobile channels vs. 68%
worldwide
• 67% in Australia are deploying infrastructure to support new products/offerings vs.
69% worldwide
• 67% in Australia are embedding or distributing intelligence, such as analytics, data or
content, across business processes, region or locations vs. 54% worldwide
• Four Sydney data centres: SY1,
SY2, SY3 and SY4. The newest
one, SY4, opened in August 2016
• One Melbourne data centre: ME1

4 | INTERCONNECTION, OPPORTUNITY AND GROWTH IN AUSTRALIAThis drive towards greater interconnection makes a significant bottom-line impact on
businesses and markets, as 40% of interconnected Australian companies have realised
more than AUD 14 million (USD 10 million) in revenue opportunities and cost savings.
At the same time, the installation of the NBN, a burgeoning demand for faster Internet
connections, as well as the wave of new digital technologies are driving massive economic
growth. Some 86% of enterprises use the cloud and, with key cloud players like Amazon,
Google and Microsoft, Australia is already the largest Infrastructure-as-a-Service market in
the Asia-Pacific region. Beyond 2017, Australian public cloud services will approach AUD 3
billion (USD 2.1 billion) and Equinix will be a powerful element in that growth.
Equinix products and services are built upon the value of interconnection to help
enterprises overcome business and IT obstacles they might encounter as they race toward
enterprise interconnection and realise revenue growth that it brings.
“We partner with the best-of-breed
and our expectations have really
been met.”

SYDNEY | 7EQUINIX IN MELBOURNE
The state of Victoria accounts for almost a quarter of Australia’s GDP and it is Australia’s
second largest software centre, a major hub for software companies and has seen stunning
MELBOURNE
growth in software and technology providers in recent years.
But it is more than just a hub for the digital economy. Melbourne, the state’s capital, has
long been a centre for banking and insurance in Australia. It is home to 19% of Australia’s
two million businesses, 46% of the top Australian-owned IT companies and 20 of the ASX
top 50 companies, making it a strategic market in Australia for Equinix, its service providers
and its customers.
The ME1 IBX+ is Equinix’s first premium data centre in the Melbourne market and ME1
customers can leverage all of Equinix’s capabilities to open themselves up to the broadest
of international business opportunities.
A Strategic Location
Equinix’s ME1 Melbourne data centre is strategically located in Port Melbourne about
2.5 kilometres from the CBD. With 2,500+ m2 (26,000+ ft2) of colocation space, the ME1
IBX data centre is designed to meet the strong regional demand for premium data centre
services by the growth in data consumption and cloud services in Australian and global IT
markets.
ME1 not only offers premium colocation; Equinix has partnered with Microsoft Azure
and other parties to ensure customers have the ability to engage with a diverse array
of business partners, networks and carriers. With the Equinix Cloud Exchange, ME1

8 | MELBOURNEGeo-redundancy
A new area of growth in the data exchange services sector is for a hybrid multi-cloud that
operates across multiple locations as a form of redundancy in case any one site fails. ME1
plays a significant role in Equinix’s ecosystem development in Sydney and Melbourne
to support the hybrid multi-cloud exchange service. Not only does ME1 complement the
infrastructure of the Equinix Sydney facilities, it also loops Melbourne directly into Equinix’s
Asia-Pacific and international data exchange network. Therefore, for customers that have a
footprint in both cities and are connected to the cloud exchange platform, they can leverage
the most densely-networked Equinix ecosystem as well as have the assurance of a geo-
redundant infrastructure, ensuring network resilience.
A hub for software companies in the vibrant Victoria economy, ME1 also offers reductions
in IP transit costs and an improved end-user experience for ISPs and content providers
through Equinix Internet ExchangeTM. Melbourne facilitates reduced application and
services latency with direct access to the Equinix exchange in addition to providing
connectivity to the VIC IX Internet Exchange directly within ME1.
“The Equinix ecosystem allows

MELBOURNE | 9EQUINIX AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Equinix and the Environment
At Equinix, our purpose is to protect, connect and power the digital economy and we believe that
it is important to do this in an environmentally sustainable way. We design, build and operate
data centres with high energy efficiency standards. We have recently signed a power purchase
agreement that will bring our total renewable energy coverage in North America to 100% by the
end of 2016 and our long-term goal is to use 100% clean and renewable energy around the
globe.
We constantly evaluate the energy efficiency of our data centres and we are quick to adopt
proven energy-saving technologies or techniques on a global scale. Some of the green
technologies we have deployed globally include adaptive airflow control systems, ASHRAE
thermal guidelines to optimise interior temperatures, cold/hot aisle containment, energy-efficient
lighting systems and variable frequency drives in our HVAC systems.
Equinix constantly adopts new energy-saving technologies like the indirect evaporative coolers at ME1
When we design our data centres, we utilise local conditions to further reduce our carbon
footprint. For instance, the ME1 Melbourne IBX and SY4 Sydney IBX were designed with highly
efficient indirect evaporative cooling units that take advantage of the climate and humidity.
To help us conserve even more energy in the coming years, Equinix has adopted more
aggressive regional power usage effectiveness (PUE) design targets for new sites as well as
major expansions that meet the definition for PUE3 and represent an average incremental
efficiency gain of 8% to 10%.
Equinix, proud winner of the Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific Data Center Green Innovation
Leadership Award, strives to be respectful stewards of the environment, to invest in our
communities and to improve the places where we live and work as well as those touched by the
technology we enable.
