WELCOME

Welcome to the 2019 Summer Events Programme of the White Cliffs
Countryside Partnership and the Romney Marsh Countryside Partnership.

We offer a wide range of guided walks, practical conservation days,
children’s activities and events to help people enjoy, learn about and care
for the wonderful countryside and wildlife of the Dover and Folkestone and
Hythe districts.

     The Year of Green Action is part of the Governments 25 year
 environment plan and is attempting to connect people with nature.
    So come along to our events to learn about and love nature!

               HOW TO JOIN IN A GUIDED WALK
Turn up at the meeting place specified, remember to book if stated. Dogs
are welcome on a lead unless it says otherwise. You do not need to be a
WCCP member to come on a walk. Please note that finishing times are
estimated so please allow this when planning to join. Most walks are gentle
but please see the grading system below to come prepared.

                  Grading system explained
     Grade 1 - Very easy walk
     Grade 2 - Easy countryside walk with gentle hills. No stiles
     Grade 3 - Typical country walk with some steeper hills, stiles and muddy
               paths
     Grade 4 - More difficult walks with steep hills or very muddy paths
     Grade 5 - Difficult walks such as rocky shores, steep hills, night walks

JOINING A CONSERVATION TASK

Fancy getting your hands dirty to help look after the area’s special
countryside and wildlife? Why not come along on one of our volunteer
conservation days? Everyone is welcome and they are a great way to learn

Events are free, no experience is needed. You are not obliged to come out

to attend. If you are under 18 you must be accompanied by a responsible
adult. For a registration form, or for more information please contact Sue

           WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING WITH YOU
Bring plenty to drink and lunch if you intend to stay all day. We usually
provide water, squash, tea and biscuits. We provide an experienced leader,
training and supervision, tools and gloves, but please bring your own gear if
you prefer.

                    WHAT YOU SHOULD WEAR
•   Sturdy boots or safety shoes (not trainers) with good grip and thick soles
•   Old clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty or torn
•   Long sleeved shirts and trousers to protect your limbs
•   Waterproofs/ wellies if rain forecast
•   Sun hat and sun cream in hot weather

MARVELING AT BIRD MIGRATION
Come for a walk through Dungeness National Nature Reserve, around one of the
gravel pits and out onto the shoreline to see what birds and other wildlife can be
seen at Dungeness at this time of year. Please wear suitable footwear. Donations

CORN MILLS, PAPER MILLS AND BANKERS - DOUR WALK 1
A walk that explores the industrial heritage of the paper and corn mills which once
lined the banks of the upper reaches of the River Dour. Enjoy a beautifully scenic
walk through Kearsney upstream to Temple Ewell. By the nature of the walk we will
NOT follow a circular route, so please bring money for bus fare or arrange a lift back

BIRD WATCHING FOR BEGINNERS (Please book)
Love birds but want to know more about them? Then come on a spring-time walk
around our reserve with a friendly guide with expert knowledge on all things feathery!
And don’t worry if you don’t own a pair of binoculars, they are available to hire from
the visitor centre for a small fee. CHARGE: Adult £7, child £3.50. 20% discount for RSPB

    EXHIBITION: THE BIRDS OF SAMPHIRE
    An exhibition looking at a variety of birds which occur at Samphire Hoe.
    We have birds that live in the grass, some that hunt overhead and many
    migrants that pass through. Come and find out about their amazing stories.

Tuesday 2 April 9:30am
A RICH SEAM - A SNAP TINS AND WINTER SUNSHINE WALK
Based on Walk 8 of ‘A Rich Seam’ the walk takes you through our industrial past
following the route the miners took to Tilmanstone Colliery. Start with a Full English
breakfast at 9:30am, followed by a walk at 11am that takes you through what
was the pit yard visiting remains of the East Kent Light Railway and abandoned
Elvington Halt platform on the way. On to Tilmanstone and Dane Court once
home to the Rice family and then to Thornton Farm, returning along the Downs
to the Community Centre for a cup of tea. Free entry to Elvington and Eythorne
Heritage Centre with its large collection and display of local mining memorabilia
and much more. No drink or food upstairs in the Heritage Centre please. In case of
inclement weather, the centre will still be open for you to visit. Donations welcome

Tuesday 2 April 10:00am
ALIEN PLANT CONTROL, CLEARING HABITAT BANK &
FOOTPATHS, WESTERN HEIGHTS, DOVER
Help clear the invasive garden plant, cotoneaster, which threatens to cover the
bare, chalk cutting important for the small blue butterfly and their larval food plant,
Kidney vetch. There are other tasks available, such as footpath and step clearing,
and litter sweep. Need boots that support your ankles. LEADER: Matt Weiss, White

LITTER CLEARING AND IMPROVING PATHS
AT HOLYWELL, FOLKESTONE DOWNS
We will be doing a litter pick of Holywell Field in the morning and then improving
paths on the Downs nearby in the afternoon. LEADER: Alfie Gay, White Cliffs

Wednesday 3 April 10:30am
HIGH MEADOW – BIRDS, BUTTERFLIES & BUMBLEBEE HEALTH WALK
Join an easy walk through High Meadow, and along the top of Whinless Down, to
enjoy the stunning, long reaching views, and to observe and record the wildlife as
we go, and if you wish, collect litter as we go. We start near the top of the hill so there
is not too much ‘uphill’ to walk! The routes include some rough ground. Donation
appreciated for the walk. And during term time only stop afterwards for tea & cake
at the Vine Tearoom (please bring money if you want to buy refreshments). LEADER:

FORT BURGOYNE: VEGETATION AND SITE MANAGEMENT
A variety of practical tasks working within the 42 hectare site. This will depend on
the weather and growing conditions on the day. Continuing ongoing work to
keep and restore the Fort and maintain the surrounding countryside. Please wear
suitable strong footwear and clothing for outdoor work. LEADER: Paul Sampson,

   GREEN GANG FOR EASTER (Saturday 6 April to Monday 22 April)
   A special programme of activities for children and their families ‘The Green
   Gang’ is organised by the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership during the
   school holidays. Only some of the events are shown here. The full programme

   local libraries, local tourist information centres or from White Cliffs Countryside

BITTERN BREAKFAST (Please book)
Want to experience one of Dungeness’s most marvellous spectacles? Come on a
sunrise walk and listen to the distinctive call of our booming bitterns echoing from
the reedbeds. Jump out of bed, join us for an experience to remember, and round

Explore the River Dour’s industrial heritage, as we walk towards the sea front. We will also
take a short detour into the site of the Lorne Road Mill pond to find out all about the
work there. By the nature of the walk we will NOT follow a circular route, please bring

As part of the Keep Britain Tidy’s ‘Great British Spring Clean’ come along and help

PRIMROSES & BLUEBELLS IN THE ALKHAM VALLEY
A spectacular walk through the Alkham Valley to St. Radigund’s Abbey passing
through an ancient woodland where we should see plenty of bluebells, white
wood anemones and other spring flowers. Donation appreciated. LEADER: Marion

Join us for a morning of litter picking along Greatstone Dunes as part of the Great

BIRDING - SCORE CHART BINGO (Green Gang)
Join the Ranger Paul on a walk around Samphire Hoe trying to complete the score
chart bingo of bird sightings – points make prizes….. Binoculars can be borrowed.

WHAT DID THE ROMANS EVER DO FOR US?
ALEXANDERS CONTROL & FOOTPATH CLEARING, ROPEWALK FIELD,
WESTERN HEIGHTS NATURE RESERVE
Help clear the alexanders plant (brought to Britain by the Romans as a pot
vegetable). We’ll be cutting it back from the footpaths, steps and the chalk
grassland. There will be other tasks, such as, litter clearing, as well as short,
sparse bramble and sapling control. LEADER: Matt Weiss, White Cliffs Countryside

BUG HUNT ON DUNGENESS (Green Gang)
Join a wildlife walk looking for the wide variety of bugs and minibeasts that can
be found living on the Dungeness shingle. Activities may be amended depending
on weather conditions. No pre booking required. Donations appreciated for walk.

POP-UP RIVER LAB (Green Gang)
Discover the freshwater wildlife of the River Dour. Join us on a drop-in (not literally!)
river dipping session with your pond nets and discover the animals living in Dover’s
special chalk river. Please bring wellies and a towel. Event sponsored by Affinity

Create your own nest using natural materials and make a pine cone bird feeder to
feed the birds this spring. Suitable for ages 4+, children must be accompanied by

suitable for a short walk around the Warren (activity to take place outdoors).

LITTER CLEARING FROM THE RIVER DOUR
Come along and help clear litter from the River Dour and help conserve the
wildlife of this rare chalk stream. Some waders available to borrow - please bring
along spare socks and a towel. Please note children will not be going in the water.

Be a nature detective! Join a walk around the Western Heights nature reserve
stopping to look and find 30 signs of spring to claim your Easter egg prize. Bring
binoculars and a bug bottle/magnifier if you have one. There will be some to

SAMPHIRE HOE: EASY-TO-DO ½ DAY CONSERVATION
A programme of easy to do half day conservation tasks (10am to 1pm) take part at
Samphire Hoe. These give a chance to find out what volunteering is all about. The
work could include path clearing, vegetation management or working on the livestock

BORROW A BIRDWATCHER (Please book)
Whether you’re a keen bird watcher or only just beginning, if it’s your first visit to
RSPB Dungeness or you are a regular, this event caters for all! With one-on-one
guidance from an RSPB volunteer and expert birdwatcher, you’ll be taught some
of the basics of bird identification and watch many different species of birds.
CHARGE: Individual - £30, Couple - £50 Family/group 3- 4 people - £70 - £80 Prices

BIRD OF PREY EXPERIENCES (Please book)
The Bird of Prey Experiences at Betteshanger Park, offered by UK Owl and Raptor
Displays, provides a unique experience in a very special small group setting.
All guests will have the chance to experience incredible raptors and learn
about their behaviour, conservation and habitats in the wild. Sessions are led by
professional, knowledgeable trainers who will guide you on how to handle the
birds, and explain about the species in the wild. Your close encounter experience
will guarantee you plenty of time with the birds, and interaction with the trainers.

USING WOOD AND WILLOW FOR
A NATURAL GARDEN (Please book)
Learn how to produce natural willow plant obelisks (supports), garden signs and
wooden bird feeders. Build natural pieces for your garden to help encourage wildlife.
Learn an assortment of new skills from willow weaving to whittling plus pyrography as
part of this day long course. Throughout the day you will create plant supports from
willow and decorate them using natural materials. Then you can make wooden
garden signs using pyrography and paint them to your own style. A wildlife friendly
garden to enjoy in relaxation once you take all your new creations home. Help to
reduce the amount of plastics the planet uses. Please bring secateurs and Gardening

Saturday 13 April 12:00noon – 3:00pm
WATER WILDLIFE SAFARI (Please book)
An opportunity to view the wildlife along the canal from a very different perspective.
Guided by coaches from the Seapoint Canoe Centre, participants will paddle
either Canadian open canoes or bell boats along the canal between Seabrook
and West Hythe. This gentle paddle, with frequent stops to observe the wildlife,
will provide an introduction to the wide array of plants and animals that frequent
the water and banks of this unique waterway. Rich in fish, the waters of the canal
attract mute swans and grey herons, and the observant might catch a glimpse of
brightly coloured kingfisher. It can be cold on the water. A waterproof cagoule and
buoyancy aid will be provided but participants should bring warm clothing, suitable
footwear, and a sunhat and sun cream if the weather is sunny. Bring your own lunch.
We will be making toilet/ refreshment stops en-route. Suitable for children aged 5
and over – maximum 2 children per adult. Bookings and payment through Seapoint

Seabrook at 11.55am. The centre is situated at the far eastern end of the canal, just
off Princes Parade. Parking: car park adjacent to canoe centre (pay and display) or
park on Folkestone to Hythe Road. DURATION: around 3 hours.

WATER WILDLIFE SAFARI (Please book)
An opportunity to view the wildlife along the canal from a very different perspective.
Guided by coaches from the Seapoint Canoe Centre, participants will paddle
either Canadian open canoes or bell boats along the canal between Seabrook
and West Hythe. This gentle paddle, with frequent stops to observe the wildlife,
will provide an introduction to the wide array of plants and animals that frequent
the water and banks of this unique waterway. Rich in fish, the waters of the canal
attract mute swans and grey herons, and the observant might catch a glimpse of

Heritage Centre with its large collection and display of local mining memorabilia

This is a rare opportunity to visit Ham Fen, a nature reserve that is usually closed
to the public. Learn about the restoration of the fen and see for yourself the
amazing work that is being carried out by our resident beaver colony. The
evening will consist of a walk around the reserve with one of our wardens, to
learn about this unique habitat and to observe evidence of beaver activity.
There may also be an opportunity to watch for beaver at the end of the evening.

The Drop Redoubt and Grand Shaft will be open to the public. Napoleonic and
Second World War re-enactors will be carrying out skirmishes, parades, drills and
demonstrations throughout the weekend. There will also be a Napoleonic camp
showing what life was like for an early nineteenth century soldier. Plus other stalls
and displays including one from White Cliffs Countryside Partnership. Please note
there will be firing and loud bangs (dogs) although ear plugs for children and
