Friday, October 1, 8:30a - Red Cedar Lake Trail, Lebanon: An 11-mile hike around Red Cedar Lake and on
white bike trail. We will figure out earlier bail out points. Rating: C1. Kids and well-managed dogs OK. Hiking
boots recommended. Bring water and snacks. Bad weather cancels. Meet at the parking area by the gate. Take
Route 2 south to Norwich Road, turn right on to Camp Moween Road, left to Red Cedar Lake Road. RSVP by

Friday, October 1, 9:30a - Paddle on the Quinebaug River, Plainfield / Canterbury: A 10-mile paddle on
the quiet water of the Quinebaug River with a couple of easy sections of quick water. Rating: P2. No kids or dogs.
Provide your own boat with a PFD and a safety whistle. Bring lunch and drinks. Bad weather cancels. Meet at
the put-in on Trout Hatchery Road just past the Quinebaug Valley Hatchery in Central Village. Coming from
Windham, take Route 14 east. Just after crossing the Quinebaug River, turn left to stay on Route 14, then drive
an additional 3.1 miles. After you cross the Moosup River take the second left turn onto Cady Lane. Look for the
“Central Cycle Club” sign at the corner of Route 14 and follow signs for the hatchery. At the next intersection
drive straight onto Trout Hatchery Road. At end of paved road, take left before the little brown cement block
building then an immediate right before the Kiosk sign. Pass the gate and drive through meadow to the put-in.
Drop boat(s) and then return to parking lot before the gate. If coming from I-395, take exit 32 and at the end of
the ramp, turn right on Route 14 west. Drive 1.2 miles and turn right on Cady Lane. Follow directions as above.
For the put-in search Google Maps for “P3PJ+23 Plainfield”. The take-out and car spot is a marked right turn just
east of the Quinebaug River bridge on Butts Bridge Road in Canterbury. Search Google Maps for “M22J+MW

Saturday, October 2, 9:30a - WOTF Hike – Hill-Stead Museum, Farmington: WOTF Hike (Women of the
Forest), a Quarterly feature for the ladies of the MHC! This will be a 3-mile hike through the grounds of the Hill-
Stead Museum, followed by a snack and “girl talk” on the grounds. Wear your autumn colors or a dress/skirt for
fun; however, hiking boots will be required. Suggestions for our snack time are welcome. Rating: D2. No kids or
dogs. Hiking boots only. Bring snack and drink. Bad weather or lack of RSVP’s cancel. Meet at the parking for
the Hill-Stead Museum. From I-84 take exit 39, take the ramp to Route 4 east, turn left on Route 10 in Farmington,
then left on Mountain Road at Miss Porter’s School. In 0.3 miles turn left on Hillstead Museum Road and follow

Saturday, October 2, 9:30a - Watch Hill, Westerly, RI: Great Ocean views on a short hike near Ocean House
and Taylor Swift’s house to a lighthouse and then 3 or so miles around Napatree Point for some more great water
views. Bail out or hike as long as you want on Misquamicut Beach. Maybe a beer at Grey Sail or a visit to
downtown Westerly afterwards? Not a hike for those in a hurry to get home. Unaware of any public rest rooms
in area. Rating: C3. No kids or dogs. Sneakers are OK. Bring food and plenty to drink. Mediocre weather cancels
or changes location. No sense doing the long drive if weather isn’t clear. Meet at the large parking lot next to

Sunday, October 3, 9:30a - Scantic River Preserves, Enfield: See some remains of Colonel Hazard’s old
Powder Hollow gunpowder complex which produced a significant portion of the Union Army’s gunpowder and
hike in different Scantic River Preserves, first at Enfield/Somers town line preserve (3 miles?), then Bailey Road
preserve (2 miles? ) and then maybe a third preserve starting from where the Scantic Splash ends if there is group
interest. Post hike trip to Easy Pickins apple orchard on Bailey Road near second preserve, or Lu Lu’s or Powder
Hollow Brewery? Rating: C3. Kids and leashed dogs OK. Hiking boots only. Bring snack and plenty to drink.
Wear long pants, not shorts. Bad weather cancels. Meet at the parking for Scantic River State Park East on the
south side of Route 190 in Enfield but almost to the Somers town line. From I-91 take exit 47E for Route 190
eastbound, drive past Powder Hollow Brewery and intersection with route 191. Look for the lot entrance on the
right in 0.8 mile. You will first pass a small preserve on right in Enfield past the Valero Gas Station. Don’t park

Tuesday, October 5, Time TBD - “Irregular” Hike at Various Areas, TBD: An “irregular” hike at a brisk
pace between 8 – 11 miles may be scheduled at one of several preserves in the area. We typically break for lunch.
The pace will average 2 miles an hour for a variety of terrain, but faster on trails with less elevation. Start time
and location will be determined the preceding Sunday. Rating: B2. No kids or dogs. Hiking boots only. Bring

Wednesday, October 6, 8:30a - Pine Brook Trails, Haddam Neck: 4-mile hike on Haddam Land Trust
property and parts of the Silvio Conte NWR including paths along Pine Brook, two old mill sites, two waterfalls,
a ridge path, a loop above Salmon River, and a possible Indian cave. Rating: C3. No kids but well-managed dogs
OK. Hiking boots only. Bring snacks and water. Bad weather cancels. Meet at the parking area at the south end
of Pine Brook Road in Haddam Neck. On Route 151, travel east 2.3 miles past the Hurd Park winter parking lot
and turn right on Pine Brook Road near the bottom of the hill. Or, from the intersection of Routes 151 and 196 in
Haddam Neck drive west on Route 151 for 0.7 miles and turn left on Pine Brook Road near the bottom of the hill.

Wednesday, October 6, 9:30a - Mile of Ledges, Burlington: A 6-mile hike which includes the Tory Den and

Steady rain cancels. Meet at the pond on Greer Road, left turn off Hill Street / West Chippens Hill Road, about

Thursday, October 7, 8:30a - Hurd State Park Thursday, East Hampton: A 3.6-mile loop at a good pace
with a fairly steep climb of 300 feet. We complete the loop at 10:00 am. Friendly, well-managed dogs are
welcome. Rating: B2. No kids but well-managed dogs OK. Hiking boots only. Bring drinks. Bad weather cancels.
Meet at the Hurd Park winter parking lot at the intersection of Route 151 (Middle Haddam Road) and Hurd Park

Friday, October 8, 8:00a - Appalachian Trail to Lions Head, Salisbury: A 4.5 mile up-and-back hike with
gradual 1000 foot elevation gain. If desired additional miles can be added for other scenic views. Fall colors
should be a peak in the area. Rating: A3. No kids but well-managed dogs OK. Hiking boots only. Bring lunch &
drinks. Bad weather cancels. Meet at the Portland Police Station parking lot on Main Street between Freestone
and Waverly Avenues at 8:00 OR at the parking for the AT up to Lion’s Head on Route 41 at 9:45. Search Google

Friday, October 8, 9:30a - Soapstone Tower/ Shenipsit Trail, Somers: Short but steep climb up to tower for
great foliage views. Bail out or continue to hike north on Shenipsit Trail to Route 190. Total hike roughly 5 miles.
Rating: B3. Kids and leashed dogs OK. Hiking boots only. Bring lunch and plenty to drink. Bad weather cancels.
Meet at the parking lot at the entrance to the Shenipsit State Forest for Soapstone Mountain on Gulf Road. From
Routes 190 & 83 intersection in Somers, go east on Route 190 and take right at blinking red light onto Gulf Road.
Drive a mile plus and take right into Shenipsit Forest entrance and park in lot at entrance. RSVP by 10/07 to Jeff

Saturday, October 9, 8:45a - Line Street to Buckingham Reservoir, Manchester / Glastonbury: Roughly
6-plus-mile hike to a secluded reservoir on many unmarked trails so no real opportunity to bail out. This hike is
not for those in a hurry to get back home. Rating: C3. Kids and leashed dogs OK. Hiking boots only. Bring food
and plenty to drink. Bad weather cancels. Meet at the Line Street Parking lot for 8:45 am sharp start. Get there
early! Parking always tough. Directions: From intersection of Routes 94 and 83 in Glastonbury, go north on Route
83 toward Manchester. At Manchester/Glastonbury border (across from Shallowbrook Road), take right on Line
Street and park on lot on left in roughly a mile. Don’t park in golf course lot. From I-384 eastbound, take exit 3,
left at light onto Route 83 south, cross reservoir causeway and take left onto Line Street (across from

Sunday, October 10, 9:00a - Heublein Tower & Lake Louise, Simsbury: From Penwood State Park, we will
do a 4-mile (total) out/back to Heublein Tower to see the foliage. Those who want to continue will do another 4-
mile loop to Lake Louise in Penwood, seeing the views of forest and the valley. Rating: C3. Kids and well-

Park. From I-91 in Windsor, take Route 218 west to Route 185. Take 185 toward Simsbury. Penwood State Park

Wednesday, October 13, 9:00a - Asylum Reservoirs 1 and 2, Middletown: A 4-mile hike around the two
reservoirs with a special guest. Steve Messier, author of Traprock Lichens of Connecticut, will be joining the hike
and providing commentary on lichens we observe along the trail. If anyone is interested, he will have copies of
his book available for $20; proceeds go to the CT Botanical Society. Rating: C3. Kids and well-managed dogs

Friday, October 15, 8:00a - Indian Council Caves & Roaring Brook Grotto, Barkhamsted: A 5-mile trail
and bushwhack hike on part of the Tunxis Trail to visit the Indian Council Caves, an interesting cluster of huge
boulders and rock outcroppings. After, we will hike off-trail down the Roaring Brook Ravine in the Tunxis State
Forest to an amazing waterfall between high rock walls. Rating: C3. No kids but well-managed dogs OK. Hiking

8-mile hike to the great view from Lookout Mountain Summit and then out to Pine Ledge. Opportunity to bail

park. Take I-95 to exit 88, turn right onto Route 117 south, then turn right at the end onto Route 1 south. Take a

Friday, October 22, 10:00a - Lords Cove from the CT River, Old Lyme / Lyme: A 6- to 8-mile paddle into
Lord Creek, Lords Cove Wildlife Area, and side streams. We will paddle only very briefly on the Connecticut

and a safety whistle. Bring lunch and drink. Cold rain or high winds cancel. Meet at the boat launch on Pilgrim

Saturday, October 23, 9:00a - Chauncey Peak and Mount Lamentation, Meriden: This will be about a 4-
mile hike featuring beautiful views from Chauncey. There will be an option to hike an additional two miles.

Park parking lot on Westfield Road in Meriden. Take exit 20 from I-91 and drive west on Country Club Road for

Sunday, October 24, 9:15a - Stony Creek Trails, Branford: Roughly 6-mile exploratory hike in Branford
Quarry Preserve Trails where the leader has never hiked. Print up a map and help leader find his way. Rating:
