Lena and her nine-year-old son, a blossoming gay boy affectionately known as
Potato, use American films to escape the harsh reality of their life in Vladivostok

mail-order bride so she and Potato can move to the U.S., but when they arrive
in Seattle, they discover that Lena’s new husband and life in America aren’t
quite what they expected. This autobiographical story blends dark humor,
satire, and comedic surprises into a feel-good coming-of-age story full of heart.

Over the course of a hot summer day in Los Angeles, the lives of 25 young
people intersect in clever and surprising ways. A skating guitarist, a tagger,
two wannabe rappers, an exasperated fast-food worker, and a limo driver all
weave in and out of each other’s stories. Through poetry that is sometimes
soulful and sometimes painful, they express life, love, heartache, family,

A box of letters, held in secret for nearly 60 years, opens a chapter of LGBT
history that has been sealed for decades. The letters, written in the 1950s by
a group of New York City drag queens, resurrect a forgotten world, where
being yourself meant breaking the law, and where the penalties for men
“masquerading” as women were swift and severe. This stylistically inventive
documentary uses original interviews, never-before-seen archival footage
and photographs, and innovative recreations to portray the pre-Stonewall
era these drag queens lived in. Now in their 80s and 90s, they reveal how
they survived and somehow flourished at a time when the government
sought to destroy them, and then history tried to erase them.
