world’s oldest desert and has been in

For the past few decades the Bird Paradise has become an important wetland supporting about 20 000
birds at any given time. The freshwater wetland is located on the eastern periphery of Walvis Bay along
the main road to the airport. The area borders the municipal sewage works, which occasionally pump
semi-purified wastewater into the wetland. Over the years this practice created a large strip of fertile
land covered with a number of plant species, especially reeds, and supporting a large variety of bird and
small animal species. The reed and brush undergrowth as well as the constant water supply has turned
this area into the ideal sanctuary and breeding area for many bird species, earning this area its local
name of Bird Paradise.

Etosha National Park

One of the greatest game parks in Africa–and one of the oldest–is also Namibia’s
number-one tourist destination. Home to 114 large and small mammal
species, more than 400 recorded bird species, scores of reptiles and even a fish
species, Etosha is the country’s flagship park. The size of the park has been
reduced considerably since it was first proclaimed in 1907, but its till remains
larger than several European countries.

The Ondonga name for the pan was Etosha, meaning ‘the place where no plants
grow’, but early European traders, unable to pronounce the name, called it
‘Etosha’. The pan was once part of the massive Lake Kunene fed by the Kunene
River, which at sometime in the distant past dried up, leaving the current pan
system. Newly excavated fossils belonging to marsh-dwelling antelopes such as
sitatunga, lechwe and tsessebe, and a 90- cm long catfish, are testament to
much wetter periods.

Located in Northwestern Namibia, Etosha East is a protected sanctuary in the
eastern part of the world-renowned Etosha National Park, known as one of the
most accessible game reserves in Southern Africa. Etosha East boasts vast open
plains scattered with semi-arid savannah grasslands dotted with watering holes
and secluded bush camps.

An impressive 5000-square-kilometre Etosha salt pan makes up a large area of
the eastern side of the park and can even be seen from space. This remote area
teems with abundant wildlife such as lions, elephants, black rhinos and giraffes,
as well as a variety of birdlife featuring flamingos, ostriches, eagles, hornbills,
and owls.

Namutoni Camp is on the eastern side of Etosha and derives its name from the old German fort on the
property. Owing to the presence of the fort, Namutoni has more character than the other rest camps in
Etosha. Furthermore, Namutoni is the closest accommodation to Fisher’s Pan. The pan is a renowned spot
for waterbirds, including flamingos, who come here so that they can breed during the wet season.

The fort overlooks the King Nehale waterhole. It is a hub of activity in Namutoni given that there are two
restaurants, a relaxation lounge, a bar, crafts boutique, curio shop, and bookstore.

Besides these views, an elevated decked walkway along the water-hole provides views of the
surrounding scenery, wildlife, and spectacular sunsets.
