PET MODIFICATION 2021 - Graft Polymer
INTRODUCTION
The properties of PET can be modified and enhanced to such an amount that it can then be
used in durable products such as appliance housings, electronics, furniture, transportation,
and building and construction. Such PET resins have superior mechanical, thermal,
electrical, chemical, and environmental properties to conventional bottle-grade PET resins.

Unmodified, bottle-grade PET resin begins to soften and become rubbery at 80◦C. This
makes the direct use of unmodified PET in engineered applications not possible. For PET to
be used in durable products it must be made highly crystalline and needs to be reinforced
with glass fibers or mineral reinforcements.

Modified PET with high crystallinity and low melt viscosity means that they are ideally suited
for injection molding of complex parts that require high strength, good dimensional stability,
and insulation properties.

Modified PET resins with improved rheology and melt strength for applications such as
foaming, extrusion blow molding, or simply for upgrading low-intrinsic-viscosity materials,
can be produced through chain extension/branching reactions with di- or polyfunctional
reagents such as chain extenders.

But a variety of formulants can be added to PET resin to produce a formulated, engineering-
grade thermoplastic.

IMPACT MODIFIERS & COMPATIBILIZERS FOR PET
   GRAFTABOND EV-MMA/GMA 00150 - is a copolymer of ethylene, so it’s
compatible with polyethylene and with most other ethylene copolymers.
The vinyl acetate brings flexibility, softness and polarity to the material,
and glycidyl methacrylate adds reactive groups. It is designed for impact
modification, combatibilization for PET. Dosage 5 – 25%.

GRAFTABOND EV-NCO 00130 - is a copolymer of ethylene grafted
acrylate-isocyanate (NCO). It is designed for impact modification,
   combatibilization for PET. Dosage 5 – 25%.

GRAFTABOND EV-UP/GMA 00150 - is a copolymer of ethylene grafted
with unsaturated polyester (UP) and GMA. The vinyl acetate brings
flexibility, softness and polarity to the material and glycidyl methacrylate
adds reactive groups. It is designed for impact modification,
  combatibilization for PET. Dosage 5 – 25%.

  GRAFTABOND EB-GMA 00730 C - is a copolymer of ethylene and butyl
acrylate, grafted with high amount of Glycidyl Methacrylate. It adds
flexibility and good low temperature behavior to the base material. Is a
great compatibilizer for polyolefin-polyester based compounds. Dosage
  1 – 5% (in case of twin-screw extruder).
