During the second half of 2016, production in China accelerated into double
digit growth & maintained its leading position globally. (Figure 3)
As China is slowly moving towards a market-based economy, the Made in
China 2025 initiative charters a clear objective of becoming a manufacturing
powerhouse, creating a favourable environment for the growth of new
strategic industries, and optimizing modern industrial systems.

China Automotive industry – Imports vs. Exports
Europe is the largest automobile exporter to China followed by Japan, the
US and Korea. In 2014, Europe exported over 630,000 vehicles to China,
which accounted for 45% of China’s total vehicle imports. Europe’s volume Figure 4
of exports to China increased by 81% from 2010-2014. In 2014, Germany
was the largest exporter, followed by the UK and Belgium. (Figure 4)
According to the statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Information
Technology (MIIT), in 2015, China exported 755,500 units of completed
cars valued at $12.4 billion and China imported 1.1 million units from
overseas valued $45 billion. (Figure 5)

The current market trends & status
China put great emphasis on the role of emerging technologies which is
going to positively impact on the development of the industry and overall
economy will get enhanced. One of the key development areas is NEW
ENERGY CARS. These cars will be all electric; plug in hybrid electric
vehicles to boost output and sales of new energy vehicles across China
to 5 million units with a broad based program to recover and treat old and
waste batteries of new energy cars. (Figure 6)

                                                     packaging industry of Pakistan?
A: Yes it is true. Packaging demands are changing in
Pakistan mainly due to the fact that people now prefers

out with families and friends trend is most popular.
It will be interesting for you to know that consumer
spending a few years back was at 27 Billion rupees
per annum. Now it has increased to 34.8 Billion
rupees. FMCG sector growth is in double digits. This
is a very ideal scenario for new investments but
sometimes, it happens that booming sectors attract

supply/demand parity and profit ratios start declining.
This is what exactly happening in Pakistan right now.
Very soon you will see that industry will start taking

A: Government of Pakistan needs to rationalize taxes

     international paper market?
A: The first paper manufacturing plant established in
Pakistan was Adamjee Paper Mill. It was in 1956.
Currently the formal and informal sectors together
have 100 units producing 650,000 tons of various

   Work – Life Lessons
   From

   STEPHEN
    HAWKING
Stephen Hawking was one of the brightest stars of science. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and
legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humor inspired people across the world.
Prof. Hawking was the first to set out a theory of cosmology as a union of relativity and quantum mechanics. He also discovered
that black holes leak energy and fade to nothing - a phenomenon that would later become known as Hawking radiation.
As the world mourns the loss of Stephen Hawking, one of the prominent physicists, cosmologists & authors of our time, who
passed away on March 14th 2018, let us reflect on what we can learn from his life.

QUESTION RELENTLESSLY
“I am just a child who has never grown up. I still keep asking HOW
& WHY questions. Occasionally, I find an answer” Hawking’s
words remind us to remain curious. He was of the view that
we can discover the answers to our questions by constantly
searching for them. Therefore, in order to be successful,
remember to repeatedly question what you are doing, and find
new ways to improve yourself and your work.

NEVER GIVE UP
Hawking served as a prime example of someone who never gave
up. He was told by his doctor that he has two and a half years to
live, and in the nearly five decades after that, he accomplished
so much despite being confined to a wheelchair due to the fact
that he suffered from ALS, a motor neuron disease. Therefore,
never lose sight of the belief that solutions do exist, no matter
how difficult obstacles you face at work or in your personal life.

COMMUNICATE SIMPLE
Despite its complex subject matter, Hawking’s A BRIEF
HISTORY OF TIME has been read so far and wide because he
has made it so clear and comprehensible. Had he not simplified
the content and managed to communicate his concepts so
simply, the information in his mind would never have reached
such a wide audience.

BE AMBITIOUS
Hawking said” My goal is simple. It is the complete understanding
of the universe… and why it exists at all. Although it is wise to
set achievable goals, thinking big, being ambitious and setting
even higher goals that may seem unachievable can drive you to
accomplish them.
Needless to say, Professor Hawking will be always remembered
for his extraordinary role in propagating determination, positivity
and love of life.

engine components and more advanced techniques like SLS 3D printing
are increasingly being implemented for final phase production as well as
concepts. At a recent motor show held in New York, industry professionals
discussed these developments and explained how design engineers are
adopting techniques being transformed by 3D printing.
“We can do things now which were not possible before we had 3D printing,”
said Head of Design MINI, Oliver Heilmer at a conference. Now we can
design entire door panel in piece will be lighter when manufactured by 3D printing. We are now able to change the look & feel at any
point even after the manufacturing begins without the help of new tools to make it. Before this, it would take more than an year to make
the change happen.
Besides the door, the center wheel locks for the car were also produced by using 3D printing technology, and there are various
other 3D printed parts. One of the key benefit of implementing the technology is that direct manufacturing is possible from a digital
model enabling a higher degree of precision & complexity in terms of geometry. This is a great advantage in terms of functionality , as
engineers can create the most efficient structures to optimize comfort & performance of the vehicle.
3D printing technology also eliminates major limitations like the ones placed on design freedom by production capacity. In the past,
when designing a component, a designer would need to take into account not just geometries & materials but also specific tooling
methods available. What tools were used to produce the part would have a serious impact on its quality even affect the possibility of
making it, and this could often hold designers back. With 3D printing, almost anything that can be designed can be realized, and the
range of material properties continues to expand.
It is said that the open-source natures of 3D printing will also change the way that individual car owners relate to their car. The
technology allows for high level of personalization & customization, enabling users to directly get involved in the design process.
“There is an emotional aspect behind 3D printing. It allows freedom to bond with your car” says Heilmer.

Starbucks Corp. is pledging millions of dollars, and partnering with a well-known recycling organization, to try to solve its cup
problem. The coffee giant faced challenges in the past over the recyclability of its paper cups that are lined with polyethylene. The
company also serves cold drinks in plastic cups.
STARBUCKS recently announced that it will commit $10 million to the Center for the Circular Economy at Closed Loop Partners
to find a global end-to-end solution that would allow cups around the world to be diverted from landfills. Starbucks, meanwhile,
also said the company is currently working on a new “bio-liner” made from plant-based materials for the company’s paper cups.
Talking about the NEXTGEN CHALLENGE, company spokesman said the Challenge will enable leading innovators and
entrepreneurs with financial, technical, and expert resources to fast-track global solutions, help get those solutions to shelf,
through the recovery system and back into the supply chain.

Subsidized Energy Tariffs Can Maximize Plastic Industry Output:
                                           Says FARID AHMED VAWDA

Mr. Farid Vawda is a seasoned industrialist of Pakistan mainly involved in manufacturing of chemicals,
dyes & masterbatches. From a humble beginning in 1982, Mr. Vawda moved forward to found FAV
group under whose umbrella, 19 companies are working in the field of lab equipment, compressors,
printers, copiers, CC TV cameras, security equipment, IT solutions, warehousing equipment & food
products. In a recent interview, he talked about his passion to contribute positively for the progress
& prosperity of Pakistan.

Q: Sir please tells us how it all began? international exhibitions & conferences moreover; the
A: I started my career in 1982 from textile chemical government should devise a policy to offer soft loans
business. In 1991, I developed locally made acrylic to manufacturers for new technology acquisition. Till
dyes which were as effective as imported dyes. I now, the industry has done solo efforts to bring latest
introduced my product on incredibly low prices. This manufacturing technologies in Pakistan but individual
strategy paid off in a big way & throughout pakistan investors have their limitations. With the support of
my acrylic dyes overthrew the imported dyes. My government, the plastic industry can cross this barrier
products became the need of the market & soon, my to stand out in South East Asian region.
company took 90% market share across Sindh. After
that, I developed a lot of new dyes & pigments as per Q: What are those barriers which are hampering the
market demand which were also very successful. growth of plastic industry in Pakistan?
A: High energy tariffs, high rate of GST which is 17%
Q: When did you start masterbatches production? I think it should be reduced to a single digit & high
A: After a careful study of plastic field & much deliberation import tariff. All these highs lead to higher cost of
on product development, masterbatches production production which further burdens the consumer.
started in 2011. I am proud to state that all research, Secondly, export procedures are complex & refund on
product development & production work was done exports takes ages. It is very important to understand
by own resources of FAV Group. My policy is to have that plastic industry heavily depend on imported raw
a steady growth & business diversification without material therefore the industry & the government
losing sight of delivering top quality products backed should sit together and sort out these problems on
by even better after sales services. priority basis.

Q: How do you describe the potential of Pakistan’s Q: What are the future plans of FAV Group?
plastic industry? A: Definitely we will go into expansion of our chemical
A: The potential is immense, with the right support of production business in accordance with the market
government, the industry stakeholders can collaborate demands. Changing consumer trends & emerging
to enhance quality of locally made products for technologies are the key drivers of growth &
domestic market as well as creating a strong base diversification in any economy. Pakistan is going to
for plastic product exports especially in the region. play a leading role in this region & I am confident
In my opinion, government should encourage & that Pakistan’s economy will surpass many regional
support participation of plastic manufacturers in economies within a short span of time.
