Presentation Night - Ardrossan Area School
Principal’s news
And just like that we are at the end of the 2019 school year.
Thank you to everyone who attended our Presentation Night last week. It was lovely to see so many
families and community members enjoying the student’s performances. Thank you to our award
donors for their support of our school and to the staff and students for their contributions towards a
successful evening. Congratulations to all our award winners and to all students for their achievement
and growth throughout year.
                                                                                                          Margaret Roads
To our 2019 graduates and their families, SACE results will be released on Tuesday 17th December. Both
Amy East and I will be on-site from 9am if you have any questions regarding your child’s results.
2019 has certainly been a successful year for our school.
We have seen significant growth in our Literacy and Numeracy, as indicated in NAPLAN results, PAT results,
Phonics screening and Running record levels. We have implemented our new Purpose, Vision and Values. Our
attendance rate has increased from 88% in 2018 to 90% in 2019. We have continued to build connections with
our local community (including Keep Australia Beautiful judging). We have undertaken significant upgrades to
facilities including: Digital Technology Centre, Oval Nature Play, Gym AV/screen system, additional lap tops in
middle & junior school and new classroom furniture to support our flexible learning.
The end of the year often means we say farewell to some teaching staff.
Thank you to Mr Nathan Wright and Ms Lorraine Diaz for their contributions to AAS. We wish them both well for
the future. Ms Lori Brooks will be taking maternity leave in 2020. We wish Lori and her husband, James all the
best as they await the arrival of their first child.
In 2020 we welcome back Ms Kylie Cook and Ms Aimee Nixon from leave. We will also welcome Ms Emily Cook
(Home Economics & HASS) and Mrs Liese Gordon (Music) to our staff. Mr Michael Fallon (Mathematics) will join
us for the first 6 weeks of 2020 whilst Mr Stephen Herreen is overseas.
The Junior school will consist of 5 classes in 2020: Reception with Ms Kimberley Black, Year 1/2 with Ms Kallie
Eglinton, Year 3 with Mr Patrick Clark, Year 4/5 with Mr Andrew Mills and Year 5/6 with Ms Deony Sims and Ms
Aimee Nixon.
We will be implementing some exciting programs in 2020, including: Stage 1 Business Innovation: Shark Tank at
Year 10, Future Focussed Learning at years 7-9 and in Science Ms Beech will be leading the Aquaponics and
Community garden program. These are all exciting initiatives which will enhance our current work.
During the January holidays we have been advised that the trenching work for our internet cabling upgrade will
be undertaken. During term 1 2020 we can expect the change over to the new system, along with the connection
to the high speed internet (fibre optic cable) due in Term 2. This work will significantly improve our internet
access and speed.
In very exciting news, we have been advised of the successful outcome of our grant application through the Local
Schools Community Fund. Congratulations to Ms Cherie Beech and year 10 students Aiden Erfurth and Lachlan
Dayman who prepared the AAS application. The funds will be used to develop our Aquaponics and Community
garden program in 2020.
Thank you to everyone for your support throughout the year. I am extremely proud of what our students, staff,
families and community have achieved in 2019 and I am excited with our plans for 2020.
I wish students, families and all members of our school community a very Happy Christmas and a safe and
enjoyable summer break.
I look forward to welcoming everyone back to Ardrossan Area School on Tuesday 28th January 2020.
Kind regards
Margaret

Leader’s News
Deputy Principal
It is incredible to think that the 2019 school year is almost over. We have had so many
successful and memorable events throughout the year, including our Presentation Night last
Thursday. I would like to congratulate all award recipients and students for their memorable
performances in the Reception to Year 6 class items, the School Choir, Ardrossan Area School
Concert Band and AAS Stage Band – with Alana Herd’s amazing solo performance. The night
was also a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our 2019 year 12 graduates: Nikita Badari, Tysen
Harrison, Bianca Holdsworth, Jessica Lee, Mitchell Lodge, Jayden Torsney and Chelsea Purnell.
I congratulate these students on their extensive efforts this year and wish them every success
                         for their future.

R-6 Leader
Wow what a busy year it has been!
Year 3-5 students have been busy over the last couple of days enjoying their swimming
lessons. Thank you to Highview Holiday Village for allowing us to use their pool and all of the
parent helpers who have volunteered their time. R-2 swimming has been confirmed for early
next year on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Week 2.
Good luck to all Year 12 students who will receive their results next week.
I hope everyone has a safe Christmas and New Year’s.
Deony Sims Kind Regards, Deony Sims

Student Wellbeing
A huge thank you to everyone who donated to Backpacks 4 SA Kids. This organisation provides
important resources that contribute to the care, safety and wellbeing of children and young
people during periods of dislocation from home and routine care. Support exists in regional and
urban centres throughout South Australia. Three unique
programs exist within Backpacks 4 SA kids; each providing packs
filled with items unique to the recipient’s age and situation.
These include: Backpacks, Home Starter Packs, Anchor Packs
and the Christmas Program. Our School and community donated
clothing, perishables, over 150 good quality DVD’s and raised
Cherie Beech $490.00 which could be used to support any of the four
programs. Funding came from individual donations and Kadina
Subway (as a result of student subway orders). Thank you to the Ardrossan BankSA
Branch for the transport of donations to Adelaide and to our school and wider
community for your thoughtful donations. Although Christmas is generally a happy
time for most, it is also quite a difficult period for many families and individuals. I
wish you all a safe and happy holiday period and look forward to seeing you all again
in 2020. Thanks for your on-going support this year.
Happy Holidays – Cherie Beech

Marine Biology Excursion
Students interested in exploring marine animals joined Mrs Beech and Mr Heyes on the Pine Point Reef.
They learnt about the range of marine invertebrates inhabiting the reef and soft sediment
environments. Students also heard about the implications of the Asian Paddle Crab entering Gulf St
Vincent and after a few hours they became expert ‘crabbers’ and could easily
identify male and female crabs. Students were engaged and keen to explore
additional coast and marine environments in 2020.
