Here comes Summer Ledyard!
Though this winter was not excessively snowy, it was long and expensive since most storms came after hours and weekends (even
Christmas morning). With winter behind us, it’s time to get out and enjoy what your town has to offer‐ Parks and Rec programs,
hikes at the Glacier Park, Erickson Park, Stoddard’s Park and the many open space parcels our town has for passive recreational use.
One of the big draws for kids each summer is the summer camp by Ledyard Parks and Rec. Though the price increased this year, it is
still an exceptional value at about $20 per day. The on‐line registration process is quick, easy and convenient. Don’t miss the
Memorial Day Parade too, a time‐ honored tradition in Ledyard, a long‐standing military town. The parade itself kicks off at 1:00PM
on Sunday May 27th in Ledyard Center. Thank you to the Ledyard Lions for their continued efforts in organizing the parade.
Be sure to visit the Ledyard Farmer’s Market this summer too. Lots of garden fresh, locally grown produce, fresh breads and much
more. A new leadership team brings new ideas, themed markets and fun for kids as well. Don’t forget to visit the yummy food trucks
at the market‐ a convenient dinner stop while you’re at the market picking up fresh fruits and vegetables for the week.
In local government, we continue to seek efficiencies. We are reducing the number of boards and commissions, as some are
duplicitous in their goals and it becomes more challenging each year to secure volunteers. This also reduces the work load in setting
agendas and posting of minutes. The LED street light project is now complete. These ultra‐reliable, efficient fixtures have a short
payback period and $560,000 savings over 20 years. We also have another solar project coming on‐line in Ledyard. This array is
located at the wastewater treatment facility and serves the facility itself‐ a huge consumer of electricity. We benefit from a low fixed
rate for 20 years AND about $500,000 in reduced electricity costs. Ledyard operates a lean, efficient government but I continually
ask the question “What is our role in government?”
On the Economic Development side, progress on the Thames Aquatic building will ramp up this summer. The former police facility
is being sold and put back on the tax rolls. Also, the Ledyard Center School property is for sale as we seek to sell shortly after the
school is vacated to avoid lengthy ownership of vacant buildings. When you have a moment, look at the “vision concept” for Ledyard
Center on my Facebook page. It will be quite a place if we can get a private investor to move ahead. I also welcomed our new Town
Planner, Liz Burdick to Ledyard. In traditional Ledyard ways, Liz will wear many “hats” including planning, EDC, grant writing, GIS
mapping, subdivision and re‐subdivision oversight and more. Liz will be an asset to Ledyard for many years to come.
Please friend “Mayor Fred” on Facebook to stay up to date on Town happenings, storm prep, updates and other news from the
Mayor’s office. Thank you for your continued confidence in me as your Mayor!
Best regards,
Fred B. Allyn III
