Herts for Learning (HfL) Training
and Events: Spring 2022
When I wrote my introduction to the autumn 2021 brochure it was in the hope,
if not expectation, that spring 2022 might bring a degree of relief to the
challenging circumstances in educational establishments. It is now clear
that we face an ongoing period of disruption for schools and settings
across the country.
It is imperative that HfL supports schools through these challenging
times. Whilst the current era of uncertainty continues, one thing is
certain, change brings the opportunity to do things differently. In the
spring term there are over 70 on-demand courses that staff can
complete at a time of their choosing, meeting the demands of busy
workloads and schedules.
HfL’s first digital national conference was a huge success. Over 300 delegates experienced a
virtual learning environment that was fully interactive and immersive. Customer feedback has
been very positive and has enabled the key learnings to be implemented in both our national
primary English conference in January: ‘That’s me!’ Ensuring diverse representation across the
primary English curriculum and national Early Years conference in March: Child development:
A fresh look at the curriculum.
For the spring term, the overall programme now comprises over 250 individual sessions,
providing effective and efficient CPD. Of particular note is HfLs annual SEND conference in
February: Crafting Curiosity and our annual disadvantaged conference: Striving for Equity.
If you missed our live ‘Progressing anti-racism step by step’ series, you can catch up with
the first two sessions, language matters and BAME pupil and parent voice on-demand from
January. The next two live sessions are also now available to book: BAME primary curriculum
and resources and decolonising the secondary curriculum.
This summary brochure provides an overview of all current training opportunities for next term,
further details can be viewed on HfL’s CPD Hub: cpd.hertsforlearning.co.uk. Additional events
will be added to our programme as we respond to demand and changes in the educational
landscape, to receive updates you can sign up to our mailing list.
While not underestimating the ongoing challenges of transitioning our training online, I have
every confidence that HfL’s considerable experience will continue to support you in achieving
the best possible outcome for children. Please read our ‘How to prepare for online training’
guide on page 3 to ensure you get the best from your experience.
If you require further information on any of our training or additional support with booking,
please do not hesitate to contact the Events team via email: training@hertsforlearning.co.uk
or by calling on our direct number: 01438 544477. We also offer training on utilising our
CPD Hub to manage bookings, please see page 4 for further details.
If you have any questions relating to any aspect of our spring training and events programme
please do not hesitate to contact me directly.
Best regards,
Mark Webb
Head of Events
mark.webb@hertsforlearning.co.ukHow to prepare for online training
Herts for Learning (HfL) is offering a range of online events to support
schools and settings and is committed to widening accessibility and
ensuring the best possible learning outcomes. Here are some tips on
taking part successfully – whether you are joining an event from a
school, setting, home or elsewhere.
General advice
1.
All events will be accessible on a mobile device (smartphone or tablet) – but if you have an option to
access them via a laptop or desktop computer then this is preferable as text and images will be more
legible and sound quality is likely to be higher, resulting in a better overall experience. You should have
access to a power source for your device/computer to ensure you don’t lose power during the training.
2. hould you choose to access a live or pre-recorded event via a mobile device for convenience, then in
S
many cases you can access the event via a computer at a later date.
3.
If you are using a tablet or smartphone and are in a location with Wi-Fi – for example your home or
school– then you should always use the Wi-Fi connection rather than your mobile data connection. Live-
streamed events and video-heavy online content uses significant amounts of data. If you are taking part
from home then be aware of other demands on your domestic broadband – if you need to direct others to
stop using Netflix, Disney+, Xbox or Playstation then give them plenty of notice and possibly something
else to do.
4.
All HfL events are accessible through a web browser on your device. Where possible, we strongly advise
using a modern browser such as Google Chrome, Firefox or Safari. If you don’t have access to one of
these browsers (e.g. if Microsoft Edge is the only web browser available) and are unable to install a newer
browser on your device or computer, then please contact whoever offers your technology support in good
time – and ask them to install a modern browser for you.
5. If you want to hear what is being presented in an event, you will need to ensure that your device’s audio is
working properly. Depending on your environment, you may need headphones or speakers in order to hear
clearly. A headset supplied with a smartphone can often be plugged into a tablet or computer – but again,
check in good time, rather than just before an event is due to start. Please also choose the environment
you are taking part in carefully so you can participate without any unnecessary disturbance.

Child development:
A fresh look at the curriculum
A child whose fifth birthday falls in the summer of 2021 will have experienced more than a quarter of their
life in the shadow of coronavirus. A generation of children are entering school believing the protocols and
limitations that characterise our daily lives are not a new normal, but the only normal they have known. What is
more, we know the impact of the pandemic has fallen disproportionately on the shoulders of the marginalised
and disadvantaged at a time in their lives when their future life chances may be significantly affected.
With the changes to the EYFS framework in September 2021, this timely event is for anyone working in
the early years sector interested in child development and creating an engaging and effective curriculum
that keeps child development at the core of supporting the learning and development needs of all children,
regardless of background or circumstance.
