• Alkaline Cleaners
• Neutral Cleaners
Water-based
• Acidic Cleaners
• Disinfecting Cleaners
Solvent-based
• Hydrocarbon- based
(Degreasing)
• Emulsion cleaners
• Floor cleaners
Special products • Cleaners for workspaces
• Cleaners for the solar power industry (waiver-
and glass cleaners)
Dr. F Treptow Page 3 from 23Cleaning Targets
• „Clean“ metal surfaces (to pass the “remaining particles test”
for the automotive industry)
• Removing layers that hinder diffusions (heat treatment)
• Prepare for welding (absolute clean surfaces)
• Hygienic surfaces (workspace- and floor cleaning)
• Corrosion protection
These targets are most times only to be reached with more
chamber washing machines

• Dipping
• Ultrasonic
• Flood Washing
• Vacuum
• Vacuum Pearl Washing
• Spraying 1 - 5 bar
• Pressure spraying 5 - 20 bar
• Spraying with high pressure 20 - 1200 bar
and all possible combinations of these methods
Dr. F Treptow Page 8 from 23Neutral Cleaners
• They are not really neutral, the pH value of a solution for
application is 7.5 to 10.5 (per definition)
• Neutral cleaners contain:
• Corrosion inhibitors
• Hardness stabilizers
• Sometimes surfactants
• Neutral cleaners are usually used in spraying and dipping systems
at temperatures between 15 to 80 °C without rinsing
• Most products are salt free
• Typically they are usable for ultrafiltration
• Usually they are classified as non-hazardous material

Dr. F Treptow Page 11 from 23High pressure tests at 800 bar
The cleaners are tested in
a circulating system at 70
°C for 8 hours, spraying
with a 15° nozzle
Results:
• No foam
• Very good pressure stability
• Best possible cleaning result
Dr. F Treptow Page 12 from 23Cold use at an automotive supplier
For many employees the odor caused by bacteria and fungi is a problem.
Therefore the new products are formulated longtime-stabile. The state-of-
the-art way of formulating products is to use long-time stable amines and
completely resign bactericides. Thus, the cleaners are more skin-friendly
than conventional products and are not classified according to directive
1999/45/EC.
Dr. F Treptow Page 13 from 23New automotive group standard
Energy savings through reduced temperature applications of a
common cleaner that was optimized in close, global process
integration with OEM approvals (ABB Robotics, Hammelmann)
results in longtime-stable, multi-metal compatible product
Dr. F Treptow Page 14 from 23High pressure applications at automotive manufacturers
Deburring and cleaning in one step - this is a project with major
automotive manufacturers. This nitrite-free high-pressure cleaner with
very good corrosion protection is not only suitable for steel, aluminum,
cast iron and nonferrous metals, but also for cleaning plastic parts.
The new cleaner generation is formaldehyde-releaser- and
bactericides free, but still longtime-stable and label-free through
directive 1999/45/EC. Applicable from 10 to 80°C with more than 1200
bar.

Summary: modern neutral cleaners
o Longtime-stable
o Formaldehyde-releaser-free
o Boron-free
o Silicate-free
o Free of heavy-metals and salts
o Multi-metal usable
o Fulfill already all REACH- Regulations
o Are label-free through directive 1999/45/EC
o Some new product lines are surfactant free and therefore usable at
all temperatures (no cloud-point)
o Offering hybrid technology i.e. deburring and cleaning at high
pressures in once
Dr. F Treptow Page 20 from 23Outlook: modern neutral cleaners
o According to regulations: What is applicable for emulsions could
also be applicable for synthetic solutions i.e. cleaners
o To know these regulations and be able to have input on them;
scientists who develop metalworking fluids should be members of
these committees, i.e. VSI
o Technical cleanliness is more and more important, the machine
producers, the chemistry and the user working much more together
to develop solutions
