Electronic Emissions Notices
Read the following warnings before setting up or using the appliance.
Warning - Do not block air vents. A minimum 1/2-inch clearance is required.
Warning - Many components described in this document can be damaged by Electrostatic Discharge
(ESD). Follow the precautions described here and before specific procedures detailed in the document to
protect static-sensitive components from ESD-related damage.
The machine can only be used in a restricted access location and has installation instructions by a skilled
person.
Before you install or remove a chassis, or work near power supplies, turn off the power and unplug the
power cord.
To prevent damage to any system board, it is important to handle it with care. The following measures are
generally sufficient to protect your equipment from static electricity discharge:
n This equipment must be grounded.
n When handling the board, to use a grounded wrist strap designed for static discharge elimination.
n Touch a grounded metal object before removing the board from the antistatic bag.
n Handle the board by its edges only. Do not touch its components, peripheral chips, memory modules
or gold contacts.
n When handling processor chips or memory modules, avoid touching their pins or gold edge fingers.
n Restore the communications appliance system board and peripherals back into the antistatic bag
when they are not in use or not installed in the chassis. Some circuitry on the system board can
continue operating even though the power is switched off.
n Disconnect the system board power supply from its power source before you connect or disconnect
cables or install or remove any system board components. Failure to do this can result in personnel
injury or equipment damage.
n Avoid short-circuiting the lithium battery; this can cause it to superheat and cause burns if touched.
n Do not operate the processor without a thermal solution. Damage to the processor can occur in
seconds.
n Class 1 laser product warning - A totally enclosed laser system containing a class 1 laser.
This device is not intended for use in the direct field of view at visual display workplaces. To avoid
incommoding reflexions at visual display workplaces this device must not be placed in the direct field of
view.

Lithium Battery Caution
n There is a risk of explosion if battery is replaced by an incorrect type.
n Dispose of used batteries according to the instructions.
n Installation only by a skilled person who knows all Installation and Device Specifications which are to
be applied.
n Do not carry the handle of power supplies when moving to another place.
n Please conform to your local laws and regulations regarding safe disposal of lithium battery.
n Disposal of a battery into fire or a hot oven, or mechanically crushing or cutting of a battery in an
explosion.
n Leaving a battery in an extremely high temperature surrounding environment can result in an
explosion or the leakage of flammable liquid or gas.
n A battery subjected to extremely low air pressure that may result in an explosion or the leakage of
flammable liquid or gas.
Warning - DANGER OF EXPLOSION IF BATTERY IS INCORRECTLY REPLACED. REPLACE ONLY
WITH SAME OR EQUIVALENT TYPE RECOMMENDED BY THE MANUFACTURER. DISCARD USED
BATTERIES ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS.
Electrical Safety Instructions
Before turning on the device, ground the grounding cable of the equipment. Proper grounding is very
important to protect the equipment against the harmful effects of external noise and to reduce the risk of
electrocution in the event of a lightening strike. To uninstall the equipment, disconnect the ground wire after
turning off the power. A ground wire is required and the part connecting the conductor must be greater than
6 AWG.

Suitable for installation in Information Technology Rooms in accordance with Article 645 of the National
Electrical Code and NFPA 75.
Rack Mount Instructions
The following or similar rack-mount instructions are included with the installation instructions:

1. Elevated Operating Ambient - If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the operating
ambient temperature of the rack environment may be greater than room ambient. Therefore,
consideration should be given to installing the equipment in an environment compatible with the
maximum ambient temperature specified by the manufacturer.
2. Reduced Air Flow - Installation of the equipment in a rack should be such that the amount of air flow
required for safe operation of the equipment is not compromised.
3. Mechanical Loading - Mounting of the equipment in the rack should be such that a hazardous
condition is not achieved due to uneven mechanical loading.
4. Circuit Overloading - Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the supply
circuit and the effect that overloading of the circuits might have on over current protection and supply
wiring. Appropriate consideration of equipment nameplate ratings should be used when addressing
this concern.
5. Reliable Earthing - Reliable earthing of rack-mounted equipment should be maintained. Particular
attention should be given to supply connections other than direct connections to the branch circuit
(e.g. use of power strips).

Handling the cord on this product will expose you to lead, a chemical known to the State of California to
cause cancer, and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling.

authority to operate the equipment.

CE (European Union (EU) Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive)
This device is herewith confirmed to comply with the requirements set out in the Council Directive on the

Avant de mettre en place ou d'utiliser l'appareil, veuillez lire les avertissements suivants.
Avertissement : ne pas obturer les aérations. Il faut laisser au moins 1,27 cm d'espace libre.
Avertissement - Un grand nombre des composants décrits dans ce document peuvent être endommagés
par Décharge électrostatique (ESD). Veuillez respecter les précautions décrites ici et avant toute
procédure spécifique détaillée dans ce document afin de protéger les composants sensibles à électricité
statique contre tout dommage par ESD.
La machine peut uniquement être utilisée dans un endroit dont l'accìs est restreint et être installée selon les

n Ne tenez la carte que par ses bords. Ne touchez aucun composant, puce périphérique, module
mémoire ou contact plaqué or.
n Lorsque vous manipulez des processeurs ou des modules mémoire, évitez de toucher leurs broches
ou les pistes de contact dorées.
n Remettez dans leur sachet antistatique la carte systìme et les périphériques de l'appareil de
communications lorsqu'ils ne sont pas utilisés ou installés dans le châssis. Certains circuits sur la
carte systìme peuvent rester fonctionnels même si l'appareil est éteint.
n Débrancher l'alimentation de la carte systìme de sa source électrique avant de connecter ou
déconnecter des câbles ou d'installer ou retirer des composants. À défaut, les risques sont
d'endommager l'équipement et de causer des blessures corporelles.
n Ne pas court-circuiter la pile au lithium : elle risque de surchauffer et de causer des brûlures en cas de
contact.

n Ne pas faire fonctionner le processeur sans refroidissement. Le processeur peut être endommagé en
quelques secondes.
n Produit laser de classe 1 : un systìme laser totalement clos et contenant un laser de classe 1.
Cet appareil n'est pas prévu pour être utilisé dans le champ de vision direct des personnes occupant un
bureau. Pour éviter toute gêne occasionnée par un éventuel reflet, cet appareil ne doit pas être placé dans

Mise en garde concernant les batteries au lithium
n Un risque d'explosion existe si la batterie est remplacée par une autre de type incorrect.
n Le spiles doivent être mises au rebut conformément aux instructions.
n L'installation devra être effectuée uniquement par une personne qualifiée connaissant toutes les

n Ne pas tenir par la poignée d'alimentation lors du transport.
n Veuillez respecter les lois et réglementations locales en matiìre de mise au rebut sécurisée des piles
au lithium.
n Jeter une pile au feu ou dans un four chaud, l'écraser ou la couper peut causer une explosion.
n Laisser une pile dans un environnement de trìs haute température peut causer une explosion ou la
fuite de gaz ou liquide inflammable.
n Laisser une pile dans un environnement de trìs basse pression peut causer une explosion ou la fuite
de gaz ou liquide inflammable.
Avertissement : DANGER D'EXPLOSION SI LA PILE EST MAL REPLACÉE. NE REMPLACER
QU'AVEC UN TYPE IDENTIQUE OU ÉQUIVALENT, RECOMMANDÉ PAR LE CONSTRUCTEUR. LES
PILES DOIVENT ÊTRE MISES AU REBUT CONFORMÉMENT AUX INSTRUCTIONS DE LEUR
FABRICANT.
Instructions de sécurité électrique
Avant d'allumer l'appareil, effectuez la mise à la terre avec le câble de terre. Une mise à la terre correcte est
trìs importante pour protéger l'équipement contre tout bruit externe néfaste et pour réduire le risque
d'électrocution en cas de foudre. Pour désinstaller équipement, débrancher le câble de terre aprìs avoir
coupé le courant. Un câble de terre est obligatoire et la partie reliant le conducteur doit être supérieure à 6
AWG.

Convient à une installation en Chambre Informatique conformément à l'Article 645 du National Electrical
Code et au NFPA 75.
Instructions de montage en rack
Les instructions d'installation sont livrées avec les instructions de montage en rack ci-aprìs (ou similaires) :
1. Fonctionnement à température plus élevée : si l'appareil est installé dans une armoire fermée ou un
rack à plusieurs unités, la température du rack en fonctionnement peut être supérieure à la
température ambiante de la piìce. Avant d'installer l'équipement, il faut donc s'assurer qu'il sera dans
un environnement compatible avec la température ambiante maximale indiquée par le constructeur.
2. Circulation d'air réduite : l'installation dans un rack doit s'assurer de ne pas limiter la circulation de l'ai
nécessaire au bon fonctionnement de l'équipement.
3. Charge mécanique : lors du montage de l'équipement dans le rack, il faut faire attention à ne pas
déséquilibrer l'ensemble. Un rack se remplit en commençant par le bas.
4. Surcharge : pour la connexion de l'équipement au circuit électrique, il faut vérifier les risques de
surcharge et les éventuelles conséquences sur la protection contre les surcourants et sur le câblage
électrique. Dans ce contexte, il faut tenir compte des informations mentionnées par la plaque
technique de l'instrument.
5. Mise à la terre : les équipements montés en rack doivent être en permanence reliés à un terre fiable.
Il faut faire particuliìrement attention aux branchements qui ne vont pas directement à la source
électrique (par exemple des multiprises).
Pour la Californie :
Matériau perchloraté : manipulation spéciale potentiellement requise. Voir
http://www.dtsc.ca.gov/hazardouswaste/perchlorate
L'avis suivant est fourni conformément au California Code of Regulations, titre 22, division 4.5, chapitre 33.
Meilleures pratiques de manipulation des matériaux perchloratés. Ce produit, cette piìce ou les deux
peuvent contenir une pile au dioxyde de lithium manganìse, qui contient une substance perchloratée.

Anweisungen zur Rackmontage
Die folgenden oder ähnliche Anweisungen zur Rackmontage sind in den Installationsanweisungen

1. Erhöhte Betriebstemperatur - Bei Installation in einer geschlossenen oder Mehrfachgeräte-Rack-
Baugruppe kann die Betriebsumgebungstemperatur der Rackumgebung höher als die
Raumtemperatur sein. Deshalb sollte darauf geachtet werden, das Gerät in einer Umgebung zu
installieren, die kompatibel zu der vom Hersteller angegebenen maximalen Umgebungstemperatur
ist.
2. Reduzierter Luftstrom - Die Installation des Geräts in einem Rack sollte so erfolgen, dass die
Luftstrommenge, die für den sicheren Betrieb des Geräts erforderlich ist, nicht beeinträchtigt wird.
3. Mechanische Belastung - Die Montage des Geräts im Rack sollte so erfolgen, dass bei einer
ungleichmäßigen mechanischen Belastung keine gefährliche Betriebsbedingung entstehen kann.
4. StromkreisÜberlastung - Der Anschluss des Geräts an den Speisestromkreis und die Wirkung, die
ein Überlasten der Stromkreise auf das Überstromschutz-Gerät und die
Speisestromkreisverkabelung haben kann, sollten sorgfältig geprÜft und berÜcksichtigt werden.
Beim BerÜcksichtigen dieses Aspekts sollten die Lastangaben auf dem Leistungsschild des Geräts
sorgfältig geprÜft werden.
5. Zuverlässige Erdung - Ausrüstung, die in Racks montiert ist, muss zuverlässig geerdet sein.
Besonders müssen hierbei die Stromanschlussleitungen und weniger die direkten Verbindungen zum
Abzweigstromkreis beachtet werden (z. B. durch die Verwendung von Adapterleisten).

Terminology
The following terms are used in this guide:
n Security Gateway: The security engine that enforces the organization's Security Policy and acts as a
security enforcement point.
n Security Policy: The policy created by the system administrator that regulates the flow of incoming
and outgoing communication.
n Security Management Server: The server used by the system administrator to manage the Security
Policy. The organization's databases and Security Policies are stored on the Security Management
Server and downloaded to the Security Gateway.
n SmartConsole: GUI applications that are used to manage various aspects of Security Policy
enforcement.
n SmartDashboard: A Legacy SmartConsole GUI application that is used by the system administrator
to create and manage specific settings for some Software Blades.
n Locally Managed Deployment: When all Check Point components responsible for both the
management and enforcement of the Security Policy (the Security Management Server and the

Appliance Air Vents
Make sure that the appliance air vents have sufficient airflow from front to rear when the appliance is
mounted in a rack.
Important - If the appliance vents are blocked, the appliance can become too hot and it
can be damaged.
The appliance and rack rails have been tested in extreme conditions and do not block air flow to the
appliance. These appliances are specifically designed to install with these rails.

Connecting to the Appliance CLI
You can configure advanced options in Gaia from the Gaia Portal or the CLI.
To connect to the command line interface of the appliances, use one of these:
n An SSH connection to the management interface (if SSHD is configured).
n A serial console cable and terminal emulation software, such as PuTTY (from Windows) or Minicom
(from Unix/Linux).
The appliances support these serial console connectivity options:
l USB type-C - Using the included USB type-C console cable
l RJ45 - Using the included DB9 DTE to RJ45 serial console cable
Connection parameters for the appliances are: 9600bps, 8 bits, no parity, 1 stop bit (8N1), Flow
Control - None.
If you use both the USB type-C and RJ45 console ports, the USB type-C port has priority. To use the
RJ45 port, disconnect the USB type-C console cable.
When you finish using the RJ45 port, reconnect the mini USB console cable.
Note - To use the USB type-C console port, a driver must be installed on the
console client machine (desktop/laptop). For installation instructions and the
download link, see the appliance home page.
Starting the Appliance
Connect the appliance to a power source and turn on the appliance. When the appliance is ready, you can
do the First Time Configuration Wizard to configure it.
To start the appliance:
Connect the power cables to the power supply units in the rear panel.
The appliance turns on.
Note - When one of the power supply unit cords is not connected to the outlet, an alarm
sounds continuously. If you hear the alarm, reconnect the cord to the outlet.
To turn off the alarm, press the red Alarm off button on the rear panel of the appliance.
Available Software Images
The appliances come with different software images. See the appliance home page.
Reverting to a software image takes a few minutes. To follow progress and see when the appliance is ready,
connect to the appliance using a serial console.

Synchronizing RAID
All 16000/16200 appliances support two storage devices, excluding 16600HS.
In appliances that use two storage devices, RAID1 mirroring across both storage devices is used. This lets
the appliance continue to work if there is a storage device failure.
The mirror rebuild is automatic. Both storage devices must be the same type.
First Boot Up
At first boot up, wait for up to six hours to let the storage devices fully synchronize. If you reboot the
appliance before the storage devices are synchronized, the synchronization starts again from scratch at the
next boot.
To monitor the RAID status of the storage devices from the CLI:
1. Connect to the command line on the appliance.
2. Log in to Gaia Clish or the Expert mode.
3. Run this command to monitor the RAID status of the storage devices:
raid_diagnostic
This command shows data about the RAID and storage devices, with the percent of synchronization
done.
DiskID 0 is the left storage device. DiskID 1 is the right storage device.
After the first boot and after you replace a second storage device, the RAID state (in the VolumeID

ONLINE and the DiskID:1 state shows INITIALIZING.
After the RAID is synchronized, the RAID state (in the VolumeID line) shows OPTIMAL (this indicates
that the drives are synchronized). The DiskID:0 and DiskID:1 states show ONLINE.
This example shows that the storage devices are fully synchronized (disk sizes and vendor may
vary):

To monitor the RAID status of the storage devices from the Gaia Portal:
1. Log in to the Gaia Portal.
2. From the left tree, click Maintenance > RAID Monitoring.
To monitor the RAID status of the storage devices from SmartConsole:
1. From Gateways & Servers, select the object that represents the appliance.
2. In the Summary tab, click Device Information.

3. Click RAID Volumes.
The window shows volume and disk information.
To monitor the RAID status of the storage devices using SNMP:
Set up SNMP traps to send information about the RAID.
Use OID: 1.3.6.1.4.1.2620.1.6.7.7
For more about how to configure the SNMP settings on the appliance, see the Gaia Administration Guide for
the applicable version.
To hot swap a storage device:
Important - Make sure that there is at least one fully synchronized storage device in the system.
1. When the system is up, remove the failed storage device.
2. Wait 15 seconds.
The appliance recognizes that you removed a storage device.
3. Insert a new storage device. If necessary, you can reboot the appliance with one storage device and
install the new storage device later.
The system automatically adds the new storage device to the RAID configuration.

Configure the appliance with the First Time Configuration Wizard. See the Installation and Upgrade Guide
related to the software version.
Go to the Installing Security Gateways on Appliances section, and see the instructions to use the First Time
Configuration Wizard.
