A day-long series of concerts by staff
and students of the Royal Irish Academy
of Music highlighting the music of Claude
Debussy on the 100th Anniversary of his
death on March 25th, 1918.
Claude Debussy, is one of the greatest
artists in the history of French culture and
to this day one of its most distinguished
composers. His highly characteristic
musical language, thoroughly French in
inspiration, extended the contemporary
limits of harmony and form, with a
remarkably delicate command of nuance,
whether in piano writing or in the handling
of a relatively large orchestra. On March
25th, an array of musicians from the
Academy will commemorate the centenary
of this great artist’s death in a day-long
series of concerts. His significant output
for solo piano will be at the heart of this
musical celebration, with performances
of some of the composer’s best-loved
works for piano by pianists both emerging
and professional, in addition to a number
of works from his magnificent chamber
music catalogue.

The RIAM, in collaboration with The Lir
National Academy of Dramatic Art, is
delighted to return to the Abbey Theatre
for Opera Briefs, a creative partnership
between our dynamic educational
institutions. Opera Briefs 2017 will present
a fascinating double bill on the Peacock
stage; Claudio Monteverdi’s Il Ballo delle
Ingrate and Judith Weir’s Scipio’s Dream,
a radical recomposition of Mozart’s
Il Sogno di Scipone.
Duty and responsibility have been used
to control women and their behaviour for
time immemorial. Judith Weir’s Scipio’s
Dream and Claudio Monteverdi’s ll Ballo
delle Ingrate (The Dance of the Ungrateful
Women) explore this idea in very different
but equally provocative ways. Weir seems
to be saying (admittedly tongue in cheek)
that we should give up excitement and
love in favour of duty whilst Monteverdi
seems to want us to take what we are
offered and be grateful for it or suffer the
consequences. Both operas voice warnings
to women; be constant or lose out, be
grateful or be punished. Through these
two very different operas, one comedy,
one tragedy, we can look in some small
way at the conditioning that has led to our
society’s current ideas on the rights and
wrongs of female behaviour, her duties,
her responsibilities and her punishment.
