The first of January rolls around
    Like clockwork it appears
I find it’s timing most profound
As it brings us each new year

Right on time, It’s never late
    Has never ever blown it
    Apparently this wise old date
    Refuses to postpone it

Drink a toast to January one
    For annual consistence
It’s coming means the old year’s done
    Let’s drink to it’s persistence.
    Stanley Cooper
    Happy New Year, 1926

Up Up and Away

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than
any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP'

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the
list, but when we wake in the morning, why do we wake UP ? At
a meeting, why does a topic come UP ? Why do we speak UP and why
are MPs UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a
    report ?

We use it to brighten UP a room and polish UP the silver; we
warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house
and tune UP the guitar. At other times the little word has real special
meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite,
and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing, but to be
    dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is
blocked UP. We open UP a shop in the morning but we close it UP at
    night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP. To be knowledgeable about
the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a dictionary,
it takes UP a lot of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If
you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is
used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may
end UP with a hundred or more.

When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP.
When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP.
When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP.

One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP,
…...so... it is time to shut UP!

Plant a bare root tree.
                                 January These are often cheaper
than trees in a pot and this
is a good time of year to
in the Garden plant an ornamental or fruit
                                                           tree. Dig the planting hole
no deeper than the roots but
at least twice as wide. Place
the tree in the hole and
                                                           gently spread out the roots.
                                                           Refill the hole with soil,
                                                           gently pressing down as you
                                                           go to remove any air
                                                           pockets.

Plan your crops for the year. Look back on your notes to see what you planted
     where and what worked well.
Put food and water out for the birds. Sunflower seeds are rich in necessary protein
and unsaturated fats. Nyjer seeds are very small, black seeds which are rich in fat
and oil. Peanuts should be plain unsalted. Fat balls are a favourite and fruit
bread crumbs, cheese, rice and cereals are good to put out in small quantities
however be aware that this may attract unwanted visitors such as rats.
