2 SUMMER INSTITUTE 2022

    We’re back!
We’re back! I’m not just talking about coming back together virtually, I mean
that we are once again able to return to the Jewish Center of the Hamptons,
gather in-person, and greet each other with a gesture other than a distant
wave. Programming at the Jewish Center of the Hamptons for the Summer
of 2022 will be both in-person as well as virtual. For those in our community
who are vaccinated, we invite you back to join us for events in the sanctuary.
And for those who aren’t, there are still plenty outdoor events that you are
welcome to attend, or simply engage on our virtual platform. If you reside
at a distance or simply want to enjoy our summer experiences from the
comfort of your kitchen, all of our programatic and worship content will be
                            accessible through Zoom.

Our Summer Institute has returned, and the programming is better than ever. Pick a class, attend a
lecture, watch a movie, enjoy a concert, worship at the Beach, and reenter our sanctuary, and return
to a summer in the Hamptons that is filled with transformative Jewish experiences.

… and we can’t wait to see you!
It’s been more than two years since we have been able to open our doors. I am
proud of everything the JCOH board did to ensure our safety. I am proud to
say that our staff has risen to the occasion, whether it was working remotely
or wearing masks so we could work together. We all came together to ensure
that our sacred community would be able to survive a pandemic. We did it,
and we did it together. Moving forward, let’s find sacred moments that we can
spend together. Let’s find fun moments when we can celebrate and let’s find
time to study together. This summer that is all being made possible through our
Summer Institute. From Shabbat on the Beach to concerts in the sanctuary, we
have put together rich programming and joyous moments to celebrate together.

One of the most important stories of World War II, already optioned
by Steven Spielberg for a major motion picture: a spectacular, searing
history that brings to light the extraordinary accomplishments of brave
Jewish women who became resistance fighters—a group of unknown
heroes whose exploits have never been chronicled in full, until now.

Following the riveting book by Judy Batalion about women
resistance fighters during the Holocaust, we will spend six
sessions studying women and the mark they have left and
continue to leave on Judaism. The program will delve into
biblical heroines as well as contemporary Jewish women and
their impacts on Judaism and society.
   Rabbi Debra Stein
Cantor We will explore biblical women such as Miriam, Sarah, Rachel
and Rebecca, historical women such as Madeline Albright,
Bella Abzug and Golda Meir, and contemporary women who
are blazing trails for us all. This is not a “for women only
class,” men are invited as well.

In 1942, five Jewish families escaped into a muddy hole in the ground to hide from
the Nazis. These 38 men, women, and children were determined to keep their families
alive and avoid capture in Southwestern Ukraine, a region where less than 5 percent
of all Jews survived the Holocaust. Their harrowing story was unearthed by accident
when cave explorer, Chris Nicola, stumbled upon remnants left behind. Don’t miss
this unique opportunity to meet Chris and hear about his unbelievable underground
discovery. You do not want to miss this riveting firsthand account of Holocaust history.

         A Discussion with Jonathan Orenstein
                    Thursday, August 18 | 7:00pm
In late February, as refugees began to pour into Poland from Ukraine, the JCC of
Krakow transformed itself from an organization cultivating Jewish life in Krakow, to
a refugee service center that offered food, housing, mental health services, medicine,
polish classes, and daycare to Ukrainian refugees. Join Jonathan Ornstein, Executive
Director of the JCC of Krakow, for a discussion about the Ukrainian refugee crisis and
our role in supporting those fleeing a war-torn Ukraine.

Jonathan Ornstein, a New York City native, serves as Executive Director of
the JCC of Krakow – an organization devoted to rebuilding Jewish life that
has become one of Poland’s most visible signs of Jewish revival. Prior to his
14 years with the Centre, Jonathan lectured in Jewish studies at Krakow’s
Jagiellonian University and founded the Gesher Association for Polish Israeli
Dialogue. Prior to moving to Poland, he lived in Israel and served for two
years in the Israeli Defense Forces. He currently serves on the boards of
Krakow’s Child Survivors of the Holocaust organization and JCC Global. He’s
received several awards, including the Cohon Award for services benefitting
Jewish People and the Polish Foreign Ministry Bene Merito medal for his

                           SATURDAY, AUGUST 6 | 7:00pm
Tisha B’Av, or the 9th of the month of Av, marks the day that
Babylonians destroyed the Temple in Jerusalem (586 BCE), and it has
become a day that has also represented the subsequent destructions
that have befallen the Jewish people, including the destruction of the
2nd Temple, the expulsion of Jews from Spain, and the Holocaust. On
this melancholy evening, we read the sacred book of Lamentations,
a poetic description of the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BCE.
Join us for this powerful night of poetry and commemoration.
