EMERGENCY SHOWERS AND EYEWASH
EXPLANATION OF STANDARDS
ANSI STANDARD ANSI Z358.1-2004
ANSI Standard: ANSI Z358.1 – 2004 (Emergency Eye Wash & Shower Equipment)
This standard serves as a Guide for the Proper Design, Performance and Installation of Emergency Equipment to Comply with OSHA
Regulations. This Standard was most recently updated in 2004.
The” Acorn” Range of Emergency Equipment is Manufactured to Comply with the requirements of ANSI Z358.1 the following Important
features Must be followed when choosing and installing Emergency Equipment in accordance with the ANSI standards.
Location: The Emergency Equipment should be installed not more than 10 seconds walking time from the location of the Hazard. The
Equipment must be installed on the same level as the Hazard. (i.e. This should not require walking up or down stairs or ramps). The path of
Travel from the Hazard to the Equipment should be free from Obstructions and as straight as possible.
In some circumstances these guidelines may be inadequate. For example where particularly strong acids, Caustics or other materials where
the consequences of a spill would be very dangerous Emergency equipment should be installed directly adjacent to the Hazard.
Laboratory environments may also require special consideration should the Emergency equipment be installed in a Hallway or Corridor outside
the laboratory room. This is common and while this may satisfy the Provisions of the standards it still does not provide worker with immediate
access to Emergency equipment. In these cases dual purpose Eye wash drench hose units can be installed at labs sinks. These Units are
highly accessible and versatile.
Water Supply: The ANSI standard requires the availability of Large and continuous volumes of water. The water supply must be capable of
delivering an uninterrupted flow minimum of at least 30PSI flow pressure. Piping should be at least as large as the inlet size of the unit to be
installed.
Water Temperature: The ANSI Standard requires that water being delivered by Emergency equipment be Tepid (Moderately warm or
lukewarm) tepid water is defined as between 60 -100 degrees F. If it is possible that a chemical reaction may be accelerated by warm water
a medical professional should be consulted to determine the optimum temperature.
Water Disposal: The ANSI Standard does not include provisions for disposal of water. However consideration must be given to where the
waste will go to ensure that a Hazard is not created.
Identification & Signage: ANSI Z358.1 standard provides that Emergency units be easily identifiable with Highly Visible sign. Without
suitable signage Emergency equipment can blend in and become part of the surroundings and become difficult to locate in an emergency.
Signage used should comply with the provisions of ANSI Z535.1 through ANSI Z535.5. This requires White Background with green Lettering.
Graphic and lettering must be of correct size and format. All Acorn Signage complies with the requirements.
