Waiopehu Junior Course Planner 2021 4Your timetable - Courses
Your courses are
highlighted in the
purple blocks.
The year is divided into two semesters which are about 18 weeks long. You will study five courses in each
semester. That’s ten courses each year - a total of twenty different courses in the junior school!
It is important that you gain skills and knowledge from across our curriculum to best prepare for NCEA. To
achieve this, you will have a personal meeting with one of our leadership team to ensure your course
selections are best for you.
Your timetable – Electives and more
Everyone will study Hauora, Literacy and Numeracy, and a range of Modules which will be compulsory for all.
In addition, you will be able to choose from a wide range of Electives with which you will begin four mornings
each week. These will be presented to you in a separate booklet which will circulated by 23 October 2020

How do I choose my courses?
There are many courses to choose from.
To help you find what’s best for you, follow these steps.
Step 1 Read the course list
Read through all the course descriptions. This will take a while! You could do it with a friend or someone in
your whānau. Use a ‘traffic light system’ to narrow down your courses - write in the columns below with the
course title or code.
GREEN = Courses you would absolutely love to do
ORANGE = Courses that you might like to do
RED = Courses you don’t want to do
GREEN ORANGE RED
Waiopehu Junior Course Planner 2021 7Step 2 Shortlist your courses Once this is done, sort your green and orange courses into the ‘SHORTLIST’ table below. This will help you make sure that you have a broad variety across the learning areas. As a general rule of thumb, you should try and select at least two courses from each learning area. Please put one code in each box. Learning Area Course Codes The Arts English Languages Mathematics Health & Physical Education Science Social Sciences Technology Waiopehu Junior Course Planner 2021 8
Step 3 Final course selection Name: Making sure you have a balance of learning areas, write your first 10 choices into the table below. Just write the course code - it’s in capital letters next to the course name. You need to ensure you study a broad range of courses from a variety of learning areas as it is important to gain the necessary skills and knowledge from across our curriculum to best prepare yourself for NCEA. Once you have chosen your top 10, please choose three more in order of priority (numbers 11-13) that could be backups. These may be needed if some courses clash, or if your chosen course has only a few students taking it, which may lead us to not being able to provide a teacher. The first row is an example to show you! Rank Course Code Strand Learning Area Example!
