Here we are at the tail end of the official summermonthsandthe start of autumn. the water
temperatures are highenoughto hold the gamefisharound for the nextcouple of monthsand the
snapperand reef fishingis starting to take off as well.
Mid-February the Decoro Bluewater classicwas held but only a few daysout from the start a covid
curve ball was thrown at us andwe were put into level 2 . a quickorganizingcommittee meeting was
held andwe mangedto formulate Plans A,B & C. It was all up to Cindyand Ashley to tell usour fate
on the Wednesday night. Luckilywe were moved backto L 1and the show could goon as planned.
Thestart was movedout by one daybut this hada silver lining asthe weather forecast had
improvedgreatly. The3 daysof the comphad probablythe best weather ever for the Bluewater but
the fishingwas harder than expected.
There we no marlin weighedin but 9tag andrelease plusquite a few were droppedor lost at the
boat . 4 shortbill spear fish were caught which ismore than usual. Avery nice 31kgyellowfin tuna
and a 34.5kgkingfishtook out their prize sections. A huge thanksto the organizersand also the
anglers for makingthis happen with minimumfuss and goodhumour.
Theprizegivingon Sunday afternoon was a goodchance to share tales of woe and stories of small
social gatheringsgoinginto the wee hoursof the morningin various anchorages.Later in the
evening the remainingcrowd were treated to an electric scooter ridingdisplay from a couple of our
esteemed fisherfolk muchto please of MOSTof the people present. Well done boys!
great people, goodcraic, what else do youneed in life?

- Marlin/ Tuna Tuna
The most common tuna found is the Yellow-fin Tuna, although Blue-fin Tuna are caught
occasionally. The Yellow-fin tuna can grow to 70kg and reach a length of 2 metres although
the average fish caught in the Bay of Islands is around 20kg. Many New Zealand fishermen
regard Tuna as the most challenging and exciting fish to catch. The tuna is an extremely fast
and strong swimmer. When a yellow-fin tuna is hooked, the strike is always hard and fast
with the tuna swimming quite a distance away from the boat at a great speed. They are
extremely strong fighters which challenge both the fisherman and his gear.

Marlin
The three types of marlin commonly found in our waters are stripped, blue and black and are
usually found in the early and late months of the year when the water temperature is warm.
Marlin are most common in subtropical areas and tend to stay in the pacific ocean often,
making NZ a great place to catch them.Monthly Photo Comp It was great to see so many awesome entries in our first Monthly Photo Comp!
