      Morayshire Monitor Farm

        Introduction

• From 1st January 2019 the burning/burying of
  most types of agricultural waste is banned.
  – Plastics
  – Paper/Cardboard
  – Glass
  – Metal
  – Food Waste
• Enforced by SEPA.
• Compliance is non-negotiable.

               Options

• Recycle – work with a specialist contractor to
  ensure that the waste is recycled.
• Recover – possible to send waste to an
  authorised ‘Energy from Waste’ facility.
   – No local facilities available.
• Dispose of waste in landfill – last resort.
   – Morayshire Council will charge for sending
     commercial waste to landfill + landfill tax.
   – Landfill space is limited.

    Transporting Plastics
• Ensure that loads are secure.
• If you plan to transport your own waste off-site to
  another site for recycling/land fill, you may need
  to register as a Professional Collector &
  Transporter of Waste.
   – Cost: FREE, valid indefinitely (unless cancelled).
• If you plan to transport anyone else's waste,
  other than your own you must be a Registered
  Waste Carrier (RWC).
   – Cost: £210, valid for 3 years.
• Both issued by SEPA.

       Storage of Plastics

• Storing own plastics on-site prior to collection
  – No SEPA registration required (exempt)
• Compact/Bale own plastics on-site prior to
  collection
  – Need SEPA registration for a FREE Para. 27 exemption

• If you are setting up as a collection site for others
  to bring waste to you – check with SEPA whether
  registration is required.

       Storage of Plastics

 • Not sustainable to store on-farm indefinitely.
    – Farm assurance schemes will check:
       • Max. storage period of 2 years.
       • Receipts/records of waste disposal.

 • Stored plastic waste could attract vermin.

 • Keep as dry and clean as possible.

 • Requirement to sort plastics before recycling.

• Avoid putting all plastic waste into one pile
  – Limits recycling outlets
  – Additional time to sort & extra expense to dispose of

•   Silage Wrap
•   Silage Pit Covers
•   Small Plastic Feed Bags (25kg)
•   Clear Plastic (shrink wrap, pallet covers etc.)
•   Plastic Packaging

           Plastic Type 2

• Woven polypropylene bags
    – Bulk fertiliser bags
    – Bulk feed bags
    – Bulk seed bags
       • Inner liners do
         not need to be
         removed.

           Plastic Type 3

  • Mineral buckets
  • Molasses buckets etc.
    – Can be crushed/compressed

           Plastic Type 4

• Plastic containers & lids
• Rigid plastic spray drums & lids
• Wormer/drench containers & lids
  – All must be triple rinsed
  – Prefer lids to be removed (can be included in recycling)
  – Remove foil tops (NOT recyclable)
  – Can be crushed/compressed

           Plastic Type 5

  • Net wrap
  • String/twine
     – Not recyclable at present
     – Most ends up in landfill

       W & W Mackie Ltd.

• Agent for Solway Recycling for North-East area.
• Supplier of bins & liners.
  – £260/bin (£30 discount if NFUS member)
  – £25/5 pack of liners = £5/liner.
• Plastic recycling collection.
  – All wastes bust be in a liner, must be able to tie the top.
  – Charge per liner (no weight limit):
     • £30/liner
     • £35/liner for net/twine

  North East Recycling Services

• Designated collection sites across the North-East.
  – 4 collections at each site/year.
  – Drop of on designated days. Next dates in May & July.
  – Closest collection point is Cornhill, also looking into a
    collection site near Elgin.
• Wastes can be in liners or large tote bags. (£/bag)
  – Silage wrap etc. £35/bag

Reduce Plastic Waste On-Farm

• Reuse plastics use where possible

• Consider options which use less plastic
  – Blocks vs lick buckets
  – Bulk buy, rather than in bags
  – Pit silage vs. bales
  – Re-use silage pit covers (where possible)
