ST MARTIN’S @ ST CHAD’S— Who we are.
Our patron Saint is St Martin who split his cloak and shared what he had with
a beggar.
Our Mission Statement is “Caring and sharing God’s love in the Community”.
We are a congregation who value the feeling of community, of being part of
God’s family and sharing our resources with those around us. Caring for people
with prayer and compassion, extending fellowship and friendship to all who come
to our place, offering and sharing worship and hospitality and generously
supporting, through the Lovelink Food Bank, others who are struggling.
Our worship style is traditional with hymns sung with an organ accompaniment be-
cause we are blessed with two organists. We enjoy active lay participation in our
services with lay liturgists
leading and assisting at
worship.
Currently our premises are
used by two other
congregations which reflects
in part the multiracial nature
of the Roskill Sandringham
community. Our hall is rented
by BigJudo from Monday
until Saturday at 5pm. The
judo mats are down during
that time and the hall is used
for various Judo Groups.
We have developed the
crypt as a Parish Lounge and
the Mosaic Group has under-
taken mosaicking the walls of
the crypt toilet. We also
have another office in the
crypt.

1974 St Martin’s consecrated
2001 St Chad’s closed
2004 St Martin’s deconsecrated; congregation relocates to St Chad’s.
2006 St Martin’s purchases St Chad’s

In 1961 the large borough of Mt Roskill was divided into 3 parochial districts St
Chad’s Sandringham, St Martin’s Mt Roskill and St Margaret’s Hillsborough each
with their own priest.

During the succeeding 40 years the fortunes of each parish ebbed and flowed. In
2001 St Chad’s closed its doors because its numbers had dwindled.

With the changes in the area’s demographics during those years St Martin’s added
a good number of new immigrants to its worshipping congregation. However the
need for a motorway through the area which would not encroach on the slopes of
Mt Roskill found St Martin’s in its path. In 2004 the decision was reluctantly made
to sell the St Martin’s Church to Transit New Zealand as the new motorway on
ramps would pass within eight feet of the church and all access to Dominion Road
would be removed.

Thus St Martin’s returned to the now empty Church of St Chad’s. Ultimately in
2006 St Martin’s purchased St Chad’s and the new entity of St Martin’s @ St
Chad’s was formed. The parish now covers the geographic boundaries of both
Sandringham and Mt Roskill parishes. At this time the then Vicar Rev Max Cranch
decided to retire and the parish had lost both Church and priest. At this time a
number or our Indian parishioners joined St Thomas Mar Thoma Church and also
other Indian Churches which have developed in the city.
Inevitably this presented an enormous challenge and in 2006 a priest developer
Rev Grant Robertson was installed with an initial tenure of 2 years to help the
parish decide on its best future.

History continued: Page 9

During the subsequent years many changes have occurred in the catchment area.
Property prices have risen astronomically in the Sandringham area with many old-
er villas being extensively renovated. Hand in hand with this the Wesley Estate
with its cluster of State houses has become home to many new New Zealanders
including the settlement of several refugee groups.

Sandringham Roskill is now ethnically diverse with Mt Roskill being home to the
largest group of immigrants from India in the country. With the arrival of these
new New Zealanders from many parts of the globe comes diversity in their
religious affiliation and cultural tensions arise.

Five years ago Rev Tony Surman was appointed and Parish music experienced
some revitalisation. Tony also supervised 2
St John’s College students. Sadly this was
for only a short time until Tony was called to
St Mark’s in Remuera. Over the past 3
years we have operated with a priest work-
ing half time [Rev Jacynthia Murphy]. Rev
Murphy, a Maori priest ,has supervised
students from St John’s College from the
Pacifica Tikanga. As they have already
been priested we have benefited from their
wider perspective as well.

However we have not added any Maori or
Pacifica members permanently to our con-
gregation. We remain Pakeha / Indian in
our ethnic makeup.

Our Parish office is tenanted by an
Advocate, Aarif Rasheed [Just Community]
who deals with conflict between Muslim
and Christian people as a large part of his
work.

The ethnic diversity within the Roskill Sandringham area has increased and
building regeneration , particularly in Mt Roskill is extensive with an urban rede-
velopment by the Government well under way on the South side of Mount Ros-
kill.
Details of the ethnic makeup can be found in the Government Census Data.

Page 10 ST MARTINS @ ST CHAD’S— Mission & Ministry priorities

The following priorities still stand but we are hampered by being an
older congregation with much of the work falling to the same small
band of people who are tiring. It is increasingly harder to compete
with the many demands that life has place upon whanau with external
activities both in their communities and schools. Thus those demands
push involvement and commitment in parish life to the margins. We
need to find a new way of fulfilling these priorities.

At our Parish Consultation we discussed and formulated the following
priorities for fulfilling our mission of ‘Caring and Sharing God’s love for
all in the community’:

• Establish a new parish team—Priest and Congregation together to
grow the congregation and Sunday School.
• Increase the presence of St Martin’s @ St Chad’s within the Roskill
     Sandringham community.
• Extend our Community Outreach with a ‘Drop In’ for the diverse
community around us and establish a Selwyn Centre for older
     people within the area.
• Improve the utilisation of Technology with use of overheads and
     screen and the sound system.
• Develop a Prayer Ministry and Pastoral Care team.
Practical Details for the area: Page 11

St Martin’s @ St Chad’s is located at the corner of Sandringham and Taumata
Roads and consists of the church itself which seats approximately 120 with another
20 in the choir stalls if needed. Under the Church, in the Crypt, we have
established a Parish Lounge with basic amenities and an office which is currently
shared by the Mosaic Group and the Priest-in-Charge.

We have a hall with a stage area, Kitchen, toilets and another office which is
currently rented. Under the Sandringham Road end of the hall is the area
referred to as ‘The Op Shop’ which is ripe for redevelopment. In front of the hall
is a large flower garden which is enjoyed by church and community. We have a
good sized car park. The whole complex has a commanding position with visibility
to traffic coming up Sandringham Road to the Mt Albert Road junction.

We are approximately half a kilometre from the village of Sandringham with its
collection of ethnic restaurants and foodstores. Most banks can be found in the Mt
Roskill Shopping Centre [5 minutes away by car] or Stoddard Road Shopping
Centre and mall shopping is available at St Luke’s Mall 5 minutes beyond the San-
dringham Shops.
