1. Introduction
The Information Technology & Telecommunications (IT&T) Business Unit of Athens
International Airport (AIA) is the network and infrastructure owner, operator and integrator
within the airport fence, providing reliable, state-of-the-art and innovative one-stop services.
Aiming on keeping a premium position in the forefront of new generation IT&T solutions and
services, apart of its highly specialised resources, IT&T has established strong global business
partnerships with distinguished technology partners.
The basic pillars of the IT&T customer-centric philosophy are Excellence in operations,
Innovative solutions & services, Simplicity and Cost effectiveness.

2. Data Communications
    2.1. Internet

The Internet service aims at the provision of access to internet facilities for AIA internal and
external customers. The internet service is provided to all end-users: AIA employees and all
AIA Customers. The services are mainly Switching based (or Layer 2) services and/or Routing
Services (or Layer 3). The objective is to satisfy corporate aims and business needs, maintain
the operability of airport data network and provide users a reliable, fast, and manageable
network infrastructure whether this is Layer 2 based or Layer 3 based (IP) services. For each
group of users we define a virtual local area network (VLAN) that is port based. And this is
mainly the Layer 2 service that AIA is providing. The IP services are in the responsibility of the
customer’s IT&T. According to customer needs, AIA can provide routing functionality. In that
case, we allocate a unique range of private IP (generally a half class C) and we configure our
routing engines to belong to the specific VLAN and simulate a default gateway. The data
network is based on a Gigabit-Ethernet backbone embedded on the double optical ring of fiber
cables of the airport. Through the airport data network infrastructure, each user can have at
its disposal the standard industry Fast Ethernet connection of either 10 or 100 Mbps. The airport
data network is connected to the Internet through two Multi-Homed Metro Ethernet
connections of 400Mbps in total.

                                    IT&T Service Portpolio ΙΤ&T BU

    • Internet
    • Wireless networking (Wi-Fi)
    • Telephony
    • Network connectivity (LAN)
Services address all 700 AIA employees, about 5,500 users from the airport community and
330 companies located inside the airport.
NGN is coming to cover existing needs as airport operations evolve over time. New ways of
doing business, need new services and tools in order to be effective like mobility, collaboration,
increased coverage, location based services, etc.
As the technology landscape changes with the Internet being the main information highway
for businesses worldwide, virtualization being the standard practice and not a trend, the cloud
and related services, the airport network infrastructure has to follow the evolution.

    2.3. Leased Lines

A full range of interconnection solutions are available for our customers’ varying communication
needs.
A structured cabling system, both fiber and copper, enables the interconnection of airport
premises with national and international networks using point-to-point connections, Leased
Lines, Metro Ethernet services and IP-MPLS, as well as interconnection of the airport community
stakeholders and users.

The offered services are:

    2.5. Lan as a Service

AIA, having designed a robust LAN architecture, based on high technological specifications,
is in a position to offer best class managed LAN services to the entire Airport community,
through a centaralised infrastructure. The LAN service aims at the provision of data network
services for AIA internal and external customers.

The services are mainly Switching based (or Layer 2) services and/or Routing Services (or
Layer 3). The objective is to satisfy corporate aims and business needs, maintain the
operability of airport data network and provide users a reliable, fast, and manageable network
infrastructure whether this is Layer 2 based or Layer 3 based (IP) services.

For each group of users a virtual local area network (VLAN) is defined, that is LAN port based.
And this is mainly the Layer 2 service that AIA is providing. The IP services are in the
responsibility of the customer’s IT&T.

According to customer needs, AIA can provide routing functionality. In that case, we allocate
a unique range of private IP (generally a half class C) and we configure our routing engines
to belong to the specific VLAN and simulate a default gateway.

The data network is based on a 10 Gigabit-Ethernet backbone embedded on the double
optical ring of fiber cables of the airport. Through the airport data network infrastructure,

each user can have at its disposal the standard industry Fast Ethernet connection of either
10 ,100 Mbps, or 1G for data center concetions.
The optical transmission system of the airport voice and data network is characterized by a
high-level of utilization security and robustness.
In addition, multiple path communication channels are used and the quality of each
connection is constantly monitored through an on-line cable and network management
system.

    2.6. Wireless Lan (Wi-Fi) as a Service

In similar way the Wireless LAN (WiFi) service aims at the provision of Wifi access services to

switches calls between enterprise users on local lines while allowing all users to share a certain
number of external phone lines. The CUCM system is connected to the public phone system
and automatically routes incoming calls to specific extensions. It also shares and manages
multiple lines.
A 5-digit closed numbering plan is used for all the airport community users with Direct inward
dialing (DID) characteristics. All DID extensions belong to the range of 3XXXX – 49999, while
outside callers dial the numbers 21035- as a public switched telephone network (PSTN) area
code, which is a fixed-length set of digits forming the most-significant part of the dialing
sequence to reach a telephone subscriber within the Airport.
The majority of subscribers use IP Phones with SIP Protocol for voice calls, while analogue
extensions controlled via SCCP are used in common areas and/or for special purposes such as
FAX, modems.
Telephony system services conforming to the PABX standard are offered at the Athens
International Airport to the airport users. The telephony system communication is an integral
part of the airports operational communication systems and as such, the systems availability
and capability will be part of the airport operational readiness requirements.

    3.2. Call center facilities

The Call center facilities service aims at the provision of call center and flight information
capabilities to AIA internal and external customers. Currently, AIA is using the Cisco Contact
Center Express (CCX) to provide call center infrastructure services as well as automated
Interactive Voice Response (IVR) flight information to all internal and external callers.

4. Datacenter Services
Managing an international airport’s operations on a 24x7x365 basis, it is of outmost
importance to ensure networks’ and systems’ availability as well as resilience towards all
predictable risks.

       4.1. Hosting

The scope of the service is the undertaking of high-level hosting requirements within the
airport’s datacenter areas for internal or external customers through the use of redundant
infrastructure (A/C Units, UPS Units, Main Distribution Power Boards, Copper / Optical rings).
The Datacenter hosting service includes the close monitoring of cabling infrastructure, power
provision, cooling facilities as well as hosting capacity by AIA’s IT Network Operation Center
(ISOC) as well as the airport’s Technical Base through the use of appropriate electronic sensors
and software (24h basis). For disaster recovery purposes, all hosting services regarding the IT
equipment installed are provided in a redundant way.
The un-interrupted provision of hosting Services (24x7x365) for internal and external customer
IT equipment (including servers, storages, switches, routers etc.) is based on:
   • Restricted and CCTV Controlled Equipment Access
   • Manned on-site areas
   • Power Facilities Redundancy (n+1 UPS / 2n Power Distribution Boards , Generator)
   • Cooling Facilities Redundancy (n+1 A/C Units)
   • Wiring Facilities Redundancy (Double Copper / Optical entry points)

assets, network assets, data and privacy from external and internal threats while using the
internet or browsing the web.
MSS increase customer productivity by reducing wasted time and resources, barring unwanted
traffic before it enters the access circuit by blocking spam, network-based attacks and
bandwidth-consuming traffic from worms and non-productive web surfing.
MSS target business customers regardless of their size and offer integrated managed security
services and specialised Help Desk services, while maintaining cost-effectiveness.
AIA’s MSS introduce a central management and service provisioning platform which responds
to customers’ needs as a MSS Service Provider.
AIA’s IT&T Business provides Security as a Service (SaaS).

the objective of creating a common, standardized system platform for agent-facing common-
use implementations at airports. CUTE enables AIA, the airlines and their handling agents to
access their respective IT applications in real time on shared, common use equipment. It allows
any airline to use any agent desk, gate position or selfservice kiosk for passenger check-in, and
reconciles passengers boarded. Common Use Terminal Equipment (CUTE) as well as Common
