Biomark was founded in 1990 with the intent to develop a premiere fish tagging organization using RFID tag technology. It quickly adapted into a company that not only tagged fish, but also sold RFID tag products, and developed and built RFID tag data recovery systems based on customer research needs. The founding employees chose Boise for its accessibility to the Rocky Mountains and its great quality of life and because of Boise’s strong technology businesses and research community Biomark quickly adopted it as its permanent home. As a result of the company growth Biomark has occupied several locations in and around the Boise area and prides itself in being a valuable member of Idaho’s Treasure Valley community. Product innovation has always had a strong foundation at Biomark. In the 1990s Biomark pioneered the first commercially available custom PIT tag detection systems as well as tagging and data collection tables. During the next decade Biomark played a major role in designing and developing fabrication techniques to reliably operate PIT tag antennas underwater (a major breakthrough in evaluation and monitoring technique). Biomark has emerged as a worldwide leader in RFID products for fish and wildlife research. Celebrating our 30 year anniversary working in fisheries biology and electronic identi-

TAGGING SERVICES & TRAINING
Biomark provides tagging services to the fisheries community. Trained biologists can visit your site to
provide custom training for fish tagging, conduct small-scale tagging projects using our portable tagging
equipment, or conduct large-scale tagging projects using our custom built tagging trailer.
We also provide detailed tagging workshops. These workshops can be done onsite with facility personal
and cover tagging methods, hands-on tagging training and basic software use. These workshops can be
customized to meet your organization’s specific needs and protocols and help ensure compliance.

TISSUE SAMPLING UNIT
Scientific advancements in genomics along with continued development of affordable analytics has changed
the sampling industry and collecting genetic samples has never been more efficient and cost effective as it is
with the Biomark Tissue Sampling Unit (TSU).
Each TSU includes a collection tube (vial), stainless steel blade punch, red plastic blade punch safety clip
and is designed for a single, one-time use. The blade punch cuts and pushes the sample directly into the vial
automatically sealing upon release.
The proprietary liquid buffer is usable in DNA laboratory settings without restraints on existing DNA extraction
protocols and provides a stable medium for multiple extractions.

BIOMARK TAG MANAGER™
With Biomark’s Tag Manager Software, you can easily connect to any Biomark reader and download tag
codes from the software to either Excel, Notepad, or an internal table. You can scan tags in “real time” into the
software’s table as well as input specific data for each tag pertinent to your project. The software includes a
tag code look up function that can alert the user when a desired tag code from a user defined list is found. Tag
Manager is compatible with the HPR Plus™ HPR Lite Reader, Pocket Reader, Pocket Reader EX and FS2001
in conjunction with ISO11784/11785 compliant tags [FDX-B, FDX-A & HDX tags]. The software is compatible

BIOTERM™
BioTerm is a simple Biomark reader
communication program that allows users to
download files, delete files, adjust settings, view
current status, and perform firmware updates. It
has a convenient feature for logging data from
a reader directly to a computer by enabling the
“Capture” function. When connected to a reader
with diagnostic reporting capability, BioTerm can
be an effective data logging solution. This feature
is useful for evaluating system and tag detection
performance while running a system in the field.

BIOSTAT™
BioStat is a charting and communication software designed to display and retrieve real-time data
from Biomark readers. This data includes parameters such as antenna current, noise level, tuning status, and
other key values of high-performance
systems. Monitoring these values
during system installation and
operation will ensure reliability and
confidence in system performance.
Reader parameters, displayed in line
charts, give users a simple and visual
way of understanding those values
over time. BioStat allows users to
adjust the data gathering speed and
configure automatic chart saving to a
PC. The charting process may be set
up to collect data in real-time for hours
or days when necessary. Like BioTerm,

Biomark’s Web portal provides near real-time access to view status of remote PIT-tag detection sites. Data
is retrieved every 4-hrs and displayed in the web portal. Key metrics displayed include: last tag detected, last
connection, input voltage, antenna noise, current and capacitance along with other metrics such as water flow
levels and air and water temperatures. Users are notified automatically, via email, if a site variable deviates from a
specified range. Diagnostic and tag detection data can be viewed and exported directly to CSV files. Site Module
is an effective tool for managing O&M labor and minimizing downtime; resulting in a robust dataset. Detection sites
can be grouped to allow related users the ability to see where their tags are detected across a geographic region.

Introducing the all new HPR Lite handheld reader. This is the only
reader available on the market today that has been fully designed
and engineered for aquaculture and fisheries use and the unique
environments and needs of these applications.
The Biomark HPR Lite is a hand-held rechargeable battery powered
PIT tag reading device that is compatible with the technical
specifications of ISO Standards 11784 and 11785, including FDX-B,
HDX, FDX-B BioTherm tags, FDX-B Fastags, FDX-A (FECAVA),
Trovan tags, Avid encrypted tags, and UNIQUE (Manchester)
microchips.
The Reader is waterproof (IP67: 1 meter for 30 minutes), shock
resistant, designed to be easily held and operated. The user
interface is similar to the HPR Plus reader (see page 15) and includes
large backlit screen and audible beeper, light and vibration when
a tag is read. Tag code format can be set by the user (decimal or
hexadecimal). The internal memory is up to 50,000 tag codes with
time/date and temperature (if enabled) and can communicate via
Bluetooth or mini USB for tag code download and real-time scanning
using the included Biomark Tag Manager Software.
Reader includes: Hard protective carrying case, international power
supply/battery charger (100-240V; 50-60Hz; 2.0 Amp), micro USB-
PC communication cable, test tag, user manual and hand strap.
The HPR Lite reader is not designed or intended to be operated
underwater or otherwise intentionally submerged.

BIOMARK HPR PLUS™ READER
Biomark developed the HPR Plus reader from the ground up to
incorporate features gleaned from feedback from the fish and wildlife
community and our own Biological Services Department. The reader
provides detection of ISO 11784/11785 FDX‐B and HDX PIT tags, expanded
tag storage (~1.6M), simple data retrieval via USB port or Bluetooth and
large display. It is waterproof (IP67: 1 meter for 30 minutes), and it floats.
With the HPR Plus, location information (GPS) can be appended to tag
codes in real time to provide reach level accuracy. The reader features
auto‐tuning capability, eliminating the need for a tuning box and
making it ideal for small scale monitoring applications
using any off-the-shelf antennas or a custom antenna
built specifically for your requirements.

GPR Plus
GPR PLUS
The Global Pocket Reader Plus (GPR Plus) is a portable hand-held
PIT tag reader that provides wireless communication via its integrated
Bluetooth® module. The GPR Plus is ideal for wildlife applications in
dry environments. The reader conforms to the technical specifications of
ISO Standards 11784 and 11785 and reads all Biomark tags, FDX-B ISO,
BioTherm13, HDX ISO, and FDX-A PIT tags.
The GPR Plus provides the basic PIT tag reader function of reading and
transmitting the identification code contained within a PIT tag.
When a tag is detected, an audible beeper along with the ID number in
decimal format is displayed on the screen that alerts the user that the tag
was successfully scanned.

Power is provided to the GPR Plus through 7.2VDC NiMH rechargeable
batteries or AAA alkaline batteries.

The GPR Plus has a 3000 tag code memory capacity and includes a time/
date stamp with each tag read. The memory is easily downloaded using

its Bluetooth® module. A Bluetooth visual indicator provides information
about the wireless communication status.
The GPR Plus comes with a Windows® based PC utility program which

IS1001™ SUBMERSIBLE ENCLOSURE
For optimal performance, the IS1001 should be placed as close to its respective antenna as possible. Biomark
designed the IS1001 submersible enclosure for in-river systems operating with the IS1001-Master Controller
(IS1001-MC). Each IS1001 is accessed via the IS1001-MC by way of either a CAN Bus cable or Data-Over-
Power (DOP) cable. Submersible enclosures interconnect with each other and the MC to create the IS1001-
MTS™ network. The last IS1001 can be located as much as 1,000’ from the MC. The IS1001 submersible
enclosures include cables with underwater connectors. One cable plugs into the antenna while the others plug

FS3001 TRANSCEIVER
Biomark, in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration and Bonneville Power
Administration, completed a long-term project to develop a system for detecting PIT tags passing through
spillways at hydroelectric facilities. Biomark developed the FS3001 transceiver, power supply and flat-plate
ogee antenna as part of this effort.
FS3001: The FS3001 transceiver is for
use with the ogee flat plate antenna and
exciter cable. The modular design of the
FS3001 allows driving antennas with up to
30A of current.

antennas was designed to detect PIT-
tagged juvenile salmonids passing through
spill. The antennas will be embedded in the
spillway ogee and detect fish implanted

SMALL SCALE MONITORING SYSTEMS
Biomark developed a small-scale PIT-tag detection system to cost-effectively monitor multiple antennas. The
system uses a single reader to multiplex among up to 8 or 16 antennas. The electronic components are housed
in a weather proof enclosure suitable for wind and rain, but not submersion. The system operates on grid or
battery power and includes a Bluetooth data logger for data storage and interfacing with the reader via Biomark’s
Tag Manager application.
Three different diameters of low-profile circular antennas are available with the system: 3” (7.6 cm), 6” (15 cm) or
10” (25 cm). Standard cable length is 50’ (15 m). The standard antennas are suitable for terrestrial applications,
but submersible antennas are available at an additional cost.

Antennas
Biomark fabricates a variety of antenna designs at our Boise, Idaho location. Every antenna is welded,
pressure tested, and function tested in our radio frequency screened room as part of our QA/QC process to
ensure optimal performance. There are essentially two categories: pass through and pass by. Pass-through
antennas detect PIT tags that move through the antenna opening. Pass-by antennas detect tags within a
certain distance above or below the antenna surface. Depending on the location, surrounding environment,
and antenna design, the antenna may be constructed with or without a shield. The shield mitigates for emitted
electromagnetic interference which can degrade antenna performance.
We offer variety of antenna designs and dimensions to meet the needs of multiple PIT-tag monitoring

Biomark offers pass-through antennas constructed of the same
durable HDPE material as our pass-by antennas. Pass-through antennas
are typically deployed to monitor PIT-tags passing through bypass channels,
release pipes, and adult fish ways. The antennas can be secured within
existing gate slots or Biomark can fabricate guides for the specific location.
Biomark manufacturers a “Thin wall” version of a pass-through antenna
for locations where either shielding is required or where the amount the
antenna protrudes into the passageway needs to be minimized.

FLOATING ANTENNAS
Biomark Rigid and Inflatable Floating antennas, are an innovative approach to both stationary and mobile
PIT-tag monitoring. Biomark offers two models, rigid and inflatable, both available in 10-foot lengths. The rigid
design is made up of a 10’ HDPE antenna affixed to an FRP framework and is ideal for semi-permanent,
multi-antenna arrays and larger river/higher flow applications. Rigging kits are available for the rigid antennas
for affixing to overhead cable systems. The inflatable antennas are ideal for mobile detection applications
and small scale, short term monitoring projects. The unit easily deflates and rolls up into a custom duffle bag
for mobility. In response to challenging research needs, Biomark incorporated UV resistant whitewater raft
material in our inflatable antenna design. The result is a durable, multipurpose antenna. Specifically designed
for the IS1001 24V readers.
